Nestled just southwest of Enschede in the Overijssel province, this 6 km (about 3.7 miles) loop trail circles the recreational area of Het Rutbeek, a beloved green space known for its tranquil lakes, sandy beaches, and lush woodlands. With virtually no elevation gain, this easy route is perfect for families, casual walkers, and anyone seeking a peaceful escape into nature without strenuous climbs.

Trail Experience and Navigation
The loop follows well-maintained, mostly flat paths that wind through a mosaic of open meadows, dense woodlands, and along the shores of Rutbeek Lake. The route is clearly marked, but for added confidence and real-time navigation, use HiiKER to track your progress and stay on course.
Natural Highlights and Wildlife
As you set out, the first stretch hugs the northern edge of the lake, offering wide views across the water where you might spot waterfowl such as grebes, coots, and mallards. In spring and summer, the meadows burst with wildflowers, attracting butterflies and bees. The woodlands, dominated by oak, birch, and pine, provide habitat for songbirds, squirrels, and the occasional roe deer. Keep an eye out for the distinctive calls of woodpeckers echoing through the trees.
