Loop
“Wander through ancient forests, purple heath, and echoes of prehistory on this tranquil Drenthe loop.”
Starting out near the historic town of Emmen in the province of Drenthe, this 20 km (about 12.4 miles) loop hike through Emmerdennen and Valtherbos is a gentle journey with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most walkers. The trail weaves through a landscape shaped by both natural forces and centuries of human activity, offering a blend of dense woodland, open heath, and archaeological intrigue.
Getting There
The trailhead is conveniently located near Emmen, a town well-served by public transport. From Emmen railway station, local buses connect to stops close to the Emmerdennen forest, such as the “Emmen, Centrum” or “Emmen, Hondsrugweg” stops, both within walking distance of the trail’s starting point. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the Emmerdennen car park, just off Boslaan, a short walk from the forest entrance.
Trail Overview and Navigation
The route follows sections of the Matenpad and Drenthepad, both well-marked long-distance trails. Hikers are encouraged to use HiiKER for up-to-date navigation and trail conditions, as the paths occasionally intersect with local cycling and horse-riding routes.
Emmerdennen: Ancient Forest and Prehistoric Monuments
Within the first kilometer, the trail enters Emmerdennen, a mature pine and oak woodland. This area is renowned for its tranquility and the presence of one of Drenthe’s most famous hunebedden (megalithic tombs), Hunebed D45. Located about 1.5 km (0.9 miles) from the start, this ancient stone structure dates back over 5,000 years and is a highlight for those interested in prehistoric history. Interpretive signs provide context about the region’s Neolithic inhabitants.
Transition to Valtherbos: Heathland and Wildlife
After leaving Emmerdennen, the path transitions into the Valtherbos, a more open forest interspersed with heathland. Around the 8 km (5 mile) mark, the landscape opens up, offering views across purple heather in late summer and the chance to spot roe deer, foxes, and a variety of woodland birds. The sandy soils and scattered juniper bushes are typical of Drenthe’s heathland ecology.
Cultural and Natural Highlights
Midway through the hike, the trail skirts the edge of Valthe, a picturesque village with traditional Saxon farmhouses. Here, hikers can pause at local cafés or explore the village green. The route then loops back through mixed woodland, passing several WWII-era bunkers hidden among the trees—remnants of the region’s wartime history.
Final Stretch and Return
The last section of the hike gently winds back toward Emmen, passing through quiet groves and small clearings. The well-maintained paths make for easy walking, and the absence of significant elevation (total gain is less than 10 metres, or about 30 feet) ensures a relaxed pace throughout.
Preparation and Essentials
Given the easy terrain and well-marked paths, standard hiking shoes are sufficient. Weather in Drenthe can be changeable, so a light rain jacket is recommended. Water and snacks are advisable, though there are opportunities to stop in Valthe for refreshments. The forests are home to ticks, so long trousers and a post-hike tick check are wise precautions.
This route offers a rich blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and peaceful woodland walking, making it an ideal day hike for those seeking to explore the cultural and ecological heritage of Drenthe.
