Loop
“Stroll beneath whispering pines and alongside sapphire waters in Drenthe’s enchanting Blauwe Meer loop.”
Nestled in the Drenthe province of the Netherlands, this gentle 2 km (about 1.2 miles) loop circles the striking Blauwe Meer, a man-made lake renowned for its vivid blue waters. With virtually no elevation gain, this easy trail is perfect for families, casual walkers, and anyone seeking a tranquil stroll through a unique landscape.
Getting There
The trailhead is conveniently located near the Blauwe Meer recreational area, just south of Hoogersmilde. If arriving by car, set your navigation to the Blauwe Meer parking area, located off the N371 near Hoogersmilde. Ample parking is available, especially outside peak summer months. For those using public transport, take a train to Assen or Beilen, then transfer to a local bus toward Hoogersmilde. From the Hoogersmilde bus stop, it’s a short walk (about 1 km/0.6 miles) to the lake entrance.
Trail Experience and Landmarks
The path hugs the shoreline of Blauwe Meer, offering continuous views of the lake’s turquoise waters, which owe their color to the mineral-rich sand and gravel once extracted here. The trail is well-marked and mostly flat, with sandy and forested sections providing a mix of open vistas and shaded stretches beneath pine and birch trees.
At roughly the halfway point, a small sandy beach invites a pause—ideal for a picnic or a quick dip in the warmer months. Informational signs along the route explain the area’s industrial past: Blauwe Meer was formed in the early 20th century as a result of sand excavation, and the site has since been reclaimed by nature, becoming a haven for local wildlife.
Nature and Wildlife
Keep an eye out for waterfowl such as grebes and coots, which nest along the lake’s edges. The surrounding pine forests are home to woodpeckers, jays, and the occasional roe deer. In spring and summer, wildflowers and heather add color to the sandy banks, while dragonflies and butterflies flit above the water.
Navigation and Planning
The loop is straightforward, but for those who prefer digital navigation, the route is available on HiiKER, which provides up-to-date trail maps and user reviews. Facilities at the trailhead include restrooms and a small kiosk (open seasonally), but it’s wise to bring your own water and snacks, especially outside the summer season.
Blauwe Meer Loop offers a peaceful escape into nature, with easy access and a unique blend of history, scenery, and wildlife, making it a rewarding outing for hikers of all ages and abilities.
