Out and Back
“Wander through Gelderland’s enchanting forests, riverside meadows, and timeless villages on this gentle, scenic journey.”
Starting from the charming riverside area near Dieren Veer, this 12 km (about 7.5 miles) route to Voorthuizen via Gasthuis offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most hikers. The trail meanders through the heart of the Gelderland province, an area known for its lush forests, open meadows, and tranquil waterways.
Getting There
Dieren is well-connected by public transport, with regular train services stopping at Dieren Station. From the station, it’s a short walk or local bus ride to the Dieren Veer ferry crossing, which serves as the trailhead. For those arriving by car, parking is available near the ferry terminal at Veerweg, Dieren, close to the IJssel riverbank.
Trail Experience and Navigation
The route follows a mix of paved and unpaved paths, passing through the Veluwezoom National Park’s southern edge before heading north toward Voorthuizen. Early on, you’ll cross the IJssel River by ferry, a scenic and historic crossing point that has served travelers for centuries. The riverbanks are lined with willows and reeds, and you may spot herons, kingfishers, and even beavers in the quieter stretches.
After leaving the river, the trail winds through a patchwork of farmland and woodland. The Gasthuis area, roughly halfway along the route, is notable for its traditional Dutch farmhouses and centuries-old oak trees. This region was historically a resting place for pilgrims and traders, and remnants of old inns and waystations can still be seen. Keep an eye out for interpretive signs that share stories of the area’s past.
Nature and Wildlife
The landscape transitions from open fields to mixed deciduous forests, especially as you approach the Veluwe’s southern boundary. Roe deer, foxes, and a variety of woodland birds are common sights. In spring and summer, wildflowers line the path, attracting butterflies and bees. The route is particularly beautiful in autumn when the trees display vibrant colors.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
At about 4 km (2.5 miles), you’ll pass near the Gasthuis estate, a historic manor surrounded by landscaped gardens. The estate is not always open to the public, but the grounds are visible from the trail. Further along, small chapels and wayside crosses hint at the route’s historical use by pilgrims.
Approaching Voorthuizen, the landscape opens up again, offering wide views over the Gelderse Vallei. The town itself is known for its welcoming cafes and bakeries, perfect for a post-hike treat.
Planning and Preparation
The trail is well-marked, but carrying a digital map on HiiKER is recommended for real-time navigation and to explore nearby points of interest. There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, but water sources are limited, so bring enough for the journey. The flat terrain and good path conditions make this route suitable for families and less experienced hikers, though sturdy shoes are still advisable, especially after rain.
Public transport options are available from Voorthuizen back to Dieren or onward to other destinations, with bus connections to nearby train stations. The route is enjoyable year-round, though spring and autumn offer the most pleasant weather and scenery.
