“Wander through peaceful forests, blooming heath, and echoes of history on this enchanting Dutch adventure.”
Embarking on the Ruimzicht and De Dodden via Achterveld Weg hike offers a delightful journey through the serene landscapes of the Netherlands. This approximately 6-kilometer (3.7-mile) loop trail is characterized by its flat terrain, making it accessible for hikers of all levels.
Getting to the Trailhead
The hike begins near the village of Riel in North Brabant. For those traveling by car, parking is available at the Riels Hoefke nature reserve, located at Hoefkens 1, 5133 RG Riel, Netherlands. If you're using public transportation, buses from Tilburg or Breda serve Riel; from the bus stop, it's a short walk to the trailhead.
Trail Overview
Starting at Riels Hoefke, the trail meanders through an ancient pine forest surrounding a tranquil lake. Early in the hike, you'll encounter a Maria grotto, a serene spot for reflection. Approximately 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) in, the path leads to the mock airfield De Kiek, a historical site from World War II designed to mislead Allied bombers. Here, remnants like a replica airplane and a bunker offer a glimpse into the past.
De Hoevens and the Leij River
Continuing, the trail crosses the Bels Lijntje, a former railway now repurposed as a cycle path. Around the 3-kilometer (1.9-mile) mark, you'll pass through the nature cemetery De Hoevens, a peaceful area that emphasizes natural burials. The route then follows the Leij River, providing picturesque views and opportunities to spot local wildlife.
Monastery Nieuwkerk and Regte Heide
At approximately 4 kilometers (2.5 miles), the trail reaches Monastery Nieuwkerk, a Trappist monastery known for its hospitality and Trappist beers. This is an excellent spot for a rest before proceeding. The path then enters the Regte Heide nature reserve, a vast heathland bordered by forests and the Leij River. Notably, the area contains ancient burial mounds, adding a historical dimension to the natural beauty.
Flora and Fauna
Throughout the hike, expect to see a variety of flora, including heathland plants and wildflowers, especially vibrant in spring and summer. Birdwatchers may spot species like the European stonechat and skylark. Deer and other small mammals are also common in the area.
Navigation and Preparation
The trail is well-marked with yellow poles, ensuring easy navigation. For detailed maps and additional information, consider using HiiKER, a reliable resource for hikers. Given the flat terrain and moderate distance, the hike is rated as easy, suitable for families and casual hikers. However, it's advisable to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water, especially during warmer months.
This hike seamlessly blends natural beauty with historical intrigue, offering a comprehensive experience of the region's landscapes and heritage.
