Loop
“Stroll through blooming purple heaths and whispering woods, where wildlife and history quietly enchant each step.”
Starting from the outskirts of Nijverdal, a small town in the Overijssel province of the Netherlands, this 13 km (about 8 miles) loop hike offers a gentle journey through the heart of Salland’s rolling heathlands and tranquil forests. With virtually no elevation gain, it’s an accessible route for walkers of all abilities, making it ideal for families, beginners, or anyone seeking a relaxed day outdoors.
Getting There
The trailhead is conveniently located near the Nijverdal train station, which is well-connected by regular trains from Zwolle and Enschede. From the station, it’s a short walk to the start of the loop, making public transport the easiest option. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the station or at the nearby Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park visitor center.
Trail Overview and Navigation
The route combines sections of the Sallandpad with the Blauwe Paaltjes (Blue Posts) Loop, both well-marked and easy to follow. For precise navigation and up-to-date trail conditions, use HiiKER, which provides detailed maps and waypoints.
Heathlands and Forests
After leaving Nijverdal, the path quickly immerses you in the Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park, a landscape shaped by ancient glacial activity. The first few kilometers wind through open heath, especially striking in late summer when the heather blooms in vibrant purple. Keep an eye out for the rare black grouse, a species that finds refuge in these heathlands, as well as roe deer and a variety of songbirds.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
About 4 km (2.5 miles) in, you’ll pass the Bokkendijk, a historic dike that once protected the surrounding farmland from flooding. The trail then meanders through mixed woodlands of Scots pine and oak, where you might spot woodpeckers or even a fox darting through the undergrowth.
At roughly the halfway mark, the route skirts the edge of the Holterberg, a gently sloping ridge that offers panoramic views across the park. This area is dotted with glacial erratics—large boulders left behind by retreating ice sheets thousands of years ago.
Cultural and Historical Significance
The Salland region has a rich agricultural history, and you’ll notice traditional farmhouses with thatched roofs along the way. The area was once a patchwork of heath, woodland, and small fields, maintained by local farmers and shepherds. Interpretive signs along the trail provide insight into the region’s past and the ongoing conservation efforts to preserve its unique habitats.
Facilities and Practical Tips
There are several rest areas with benches and picnic tables, particularly near the visitor center and at scenic viewpoints. Toilets and refreshments can be found at the visitor center, which also offers information on local flora and fauna. The trail is mostly on well-maintained paths and sandy tracks, suitable for sturdy walking shoes but not technical footwear.
Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash, especially during the bird breeding season. Cyclists share some sections of the route, so be mindful of other trail users.
Wildlife and Seasonal Highlights
Spring brings carpets of wildflowers to the forest floor, while autumn is a prime time for mushroom spotting. The heathlands are at their most colorful in August and early September. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars for a chance to spot the region’s diverse avian life, including buzzards and nightjars.
This loop offers a peaceful escape into one of the Netherlands’ most cherished natural landscapes, blending gentle walking with opportunities to experience the region’s wildlife, history, and scenic beauty.
