Loop
“Wander through wildflower meadows and ancient woodlands, tracing the timeless charm of Salland’s countryside.”
Nestled in the heart of Overijssel, the Salland and Sallandpad Loop offers a gentle 10 km (about 6.2 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the village of Raalte, a well-known hub in the Salland region, easily reached by both car and public transport. Raalte railway station connects directly to Zwolle and Deventer, with local buses and taxis available for the short transfer to the trail’s starting point.
Getting Started and Navigation
The loop begins just outside Raalte, where clear signage marks the Sallandpad. For seamless navigation, HiiKER provides detailed digital maps and waypoints, ensuring you stay on track throughout the journey.
Landscape and Nature
The route meanders through the quintessential Dutch countryside, characterized by expansive meadows, ancient hedgerows, and tranquil woodlands. Expect to pass through the Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park’s outskirts, where the landscape transitions from open farmland to patches of heath and mixed forest. In spring and summer, wildflowers blanket the fields, while autumn brings a tapestry of golden leaves.
Birdwatchers will appreciate the abundance of species, including buzzards, woodpeckers, and the occasional kestrel hovering above the fields. Roe deer and foxes are sometimes spotted at dawn or dusk, especially near the quieter woodland sections.
Cultural and Historical Highlights
Salland is steeped in history, with evidence of human settlement dating back to prehistoric times. Along the loop, you’ll encounter traditional Saxon farmhouses, some over 200 years old, and small chapels that speak to the region’s rural heritage. The area around Raalte is known for its agricultural roots, and you may see local farmers tending to their crops or livestock.
At approximately the halfway point, the trail skirts the edge of the village of Heeten, where you can pause to admire the neo-Gothic St. Ludgerus Church, a local landmark with a striking spire visible for miles around.
Trail Conditions and Amenities
The path is mostly flat and well-maintained, with a mix of gravel, dirt, and paved sections. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain when some stretches can become muddy. Benches and picnic spots are scattered along the route, particularly near scenic viewpoints and wooded clearings.
Public toilets and small cafés can be found in Raalte and Heeten, making it easy to plan rest stops or grab refreshments. Cyclists and horseback riders also use parts of the trail, so be mindful of sharing the path.
Planning Your Visit
The Salland and Sallandpad Loop is suitable for year-round hiking, though spring and autumn offer the most vibrant scenery. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash, especially in areas with grazing livestock. For those arriving by car, parking is available near the Raalte train station and at designated lots on the village outskirts.
With its blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and easy accessibility, this loop is an ideal introduction to the gentle landscapes of eastern Netherlands.
