Loop
“Meandering past shimmering pools and blossoming meadows, this gentle trail unveils Overijssel’s timeless riverside charm.”
Starting near the charming village of Welsum, this 12 km (about 7.5 miles) circular route along the Marskramerpad and Hanzestedenpad is a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most walkers. The trail meanders through the heart of Overijssel’s river landscape, offering a blend of open farmland, historic dikes, and tranquil water features, including the picturesque Lookerskolk and Klinkenbelts Kolk.
Getting There
Welsum is easily reached by public transport: take a train to Deventer, then a local bus (such as line 161) towards Olst, alighting at Welsum. For those arriving by car, parking is available near the village church, a recognizable landmark and convenient starting point.
Trail Overview and Navigation
The route follows well-marked sections of the Marskramerpad (part of the European E11 long-distance path) and the Hanzestedenpad, both of which are clearly signposted. For precise navigation and up-to-date trail conditions, HiiKER is recommended.
Highlights and Landmarks
- Lookerskolk and Klinkenbelts Kolk: These kolks are deep pools formed by historic dike breaches, now peaceful water bodies surrounded by lush vegetation. Lookerskolk, at around 3 km (1.9 miles) into the walk, is a haven for waterfowl and a great spot for birdwatching. Klinkenbelts Kolk, a little further along, is equally scenic and often reflects the changing Dutch sky. - Historic Dikes and River Views: The trail runs atop centuries-old dikes that once protected the land from the IJssel River’s floods. These elevated paths offer sweeping views across the river and the surrounding meadows, especially striking in spring and early summer when wildflowers bloom. - Traditional Farms and Rural Life: Passing through the hamlets around Welsum, you’ll see classic Dutch farmhouses, orchards, and grazing livestock. The area is known for its apples and pears, and in autumn, local farm stands may offer fresh produce. - Cultural and Historical Context: The Marskramerpad traces the route of medieval merchants (marskramers) who traveled between the Hanseatic cities. The Hanzestedenpad highlights the region’s trading history, with Deventer and Zwolle nearby as former Hanseatic League powerhouses. Interpretive signs along the way provide insights into the area’s past.
Nature and Wildlife
The floodplain meadows and kolks attract a variety of birds, including herons, storks, and sometimes even ospreys. In spring, the fields are alive with lapwings and skylarks. The riverbanks are lined with willows and reeds, and otters have been spotted in the quieter stretches of water.
Trail Conditions and Preparation
The path is mostly unpaved but well-maintained, with grassy dike tops and compacted earth tracks. Waterproof footwear is advisable, especially after rain, as some sections can be muddy. There are benches at scenic spots, but limited shelter, so pack accordingly for the weather. The route is suitable for families and those seeking a leisurely day out, with no significant climbs or technical challenges.
Facilities and Refreshments
Welsum has a small café and a bakery near the church, ideal for pre- or post-hike refreshments. There are no facilities directly on the trail, so bring water and snacks. Public toilets are available at the start in Welsum.
Navigation and Safety
Waymarking is reliable, but carrying a map or using HiiKER for real-time navigation is recommended. Mobile coverage is generally good. The area is safe, but as with all rural walks, be mindful of livestock and respect private property.
This route offers a peaceful immersion into the Dutch river landscape, rich in history and natural beauty, perfect for those seeking a relaxed yet rewarding walk.
