Loop
“Meandering past windmills, wetlands, and wildflowers, this scenic loop beautifully blends Deventer’s history and nature.”
Starting from the edge of Deventer, near the recognizable Bolwerksmolen windmill on Bolwerksweg, this loop trail covers approximately 5 km (about 3.1 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most walkers and families. The route is a gentle circuit that weaves through the tranquil Bolwerks Plas nature reserve and the charming village of Steenenkamer, offering a blend of riverside scenery, historical sites, and peaceful countryside.
Getting There
For those arriving by public transport, Deventer’s main train station is well-connected to major Dutch cities. From the station, it’s a short walk or a quick bus ride to Bolwerksweg, where the trail begins near the Bolwerksmolen. If driving, parking is available in Deventer’s city center or at designated lots near the river IJssel, just a few minutes’ walk from the trailhead.
Trail Experience and Landmarks
The loop begins with a stroll along the IJssel riverbank, where you’ll immediately notice the Bolwerksmolen, a historic windmill dating back to 1863. This working sawmill is a striking landmark and often open for visitors on weekends. The path hugs the river, providing expansive views of Deventer’s medieval skyline across the water, with its iconic Lebuinus Church tower rising above the rooftops.
After about 1 km (0.6 miles), the trail enters the Bolwerks Plas, a serene wetland area known for its birdlife. Expect to see herons, grebes, and sometimes kingfishers darting among the reeds. The flat, well-maintained paths here are suitable for all abilities, and benches are scattered along the route for those wishing to pause and enjoy the scenery.
Steenenkamer and Rural Surroundings
Crossing a small bridge, the route leads into Steenenkamer, a quiet village with traditional Dutch houses and tree-lined lanes. This area is steeped in local history, having served as a strategic crossing point over the IJssel for centuries. The village’s peaceful atmosphere is complemented by small farms and gardens, and in spring and summer, the fields are dotted with wildflowers.
The loop continues through open meadows and alongside small canals, typical of the Gelderland landscape. Keep an eye out for grazing sheep and the occasional stork’s nest atop utility poles. The absence of elevation gain (0 metres/0 feet) ensures an easy walk, suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
Navigation and Safety
The trail is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the route and check for any seasonal updates or diversions. Paths can be muddy after rain, so waterproof footwear is recommended. There are no significant hazards, but as with all riverside walks, supervise children near the water’s edge.
Nature and Wildlife
Bolwerks Plas is a haven for waterfowl and amphibians, especially in spring. The reed beds and ponds attract a variety of birds, making this a rewarding walk for nature enthusiasts and photographers. In the quieter stretches near Steenenkamer, you might spot hares or even a roe deer at dawn or dusk.
Historical Significance
Deventer is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, with a history stretching back over a thousand years. The Bolwerksmolen and the riverside setting recall the city’s past as a Hanseatic trading hub, where goods and timber were transported along the IJssel. Walking this loop offers a glimpse into the region’s rich heritage, set against the backdrop of its natural beauty.
