Loop
“Stroll beneath stately oaks and palace avenues, where history and woodland wildlife color every step.”
Starting from the leafy outskirts of Apeldoorn, near the well-known Paleis Het Loo, this loop trail covers approximately 6 km (about 3.7 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The route is a gentle circuit through the tranquil woodlands and historic avenues of the Veluwe region, renowned for its stately forests and cultural heritage.
Getting There The trailhead is easily reached by public transport: take a train to Apeldoorn Central Station, then transfer to a local bus heading towards Paleis Het Loo. From the palace entrance, it’s a short walk to the start of the loop. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the Paleis Het Loo visitor lot, which is well-signposted from the main roads into Apeldoorn.
Route Highlights and Navigation The Bergerallee and Maarten van Rossumpad Loop follows a combination of broad, tree-lined avenues and narrower woodland paths. The Bergerallee itself is a striking, straight lane flanked by towering oaks and beeches, originally designed as a grand approach to the royal palace. This avenue is especially beautiful in spring and autumn, when the foliage is at its most vibrant.
After about 2 km (1.2 miles), the route merges with a section of the Maarten van Rossumpad, a long-distance trail named after the 16th-century Gelderland field marshal. This part of the walk passes through mixed woodland, where you may spot roe deer, red squirrels, and a variety of woodland birds. The forest floor is often carpeted with wildflowers and ferns, and the air is filled with birdsong.
Historical and Natural Features The area is steeped in history, with Paleis Het Loo itself dating back to the late 17th century as a royal residence for the House of Orange-Nassau. Along the route, you’ll encounter remnants of old estate boundaries, ornamental ponds, and possibly even the faint outlines of former carriageways. Interpretive signs along the way provide context about the palace grounds and the significance of the Maarten van Rossumpad, which traces ancient routes once used by traders and soldiers.
Practical Tips The terrain is mostly flat and well-maintained, suitable for families, casual walkers, and those with limited mobility. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain when some sections can be muddy. There are benches at regular intervals, perfect for a picnic or a quiet moment in nature. Restrooms and refreshments are available at the Paleis Het Loo visitor center.
Navigation is straightforward, with clear waymarking along both the Bergerallee and Maarten van Rossumpad. For added confidence, use the HiiKER app, which provides up-to-date trail maps and GPS guidance for this loop.
Wildlife and Seasonal Interest Keep an eye out for woodpeckers, nuthatches, and the occasional tawny owl. In late spring, the undergrowth bursts into bloom with bluebells and wild garlic, while autumn brings a spectacular display of golden leaves. The peaceful atmosphere and proximity to the historic palace make this loop a rewarding outing at any time of year.
