Loop
“Meandering through meadows and woodlands, this gentle loop unveils Salland’s serene rural beauty and heritage.”
Starting from the outskirts of the charming Dutch village of Lettele, just east of Deventer, the Voelker, Menkveld and Maandagsdijk Loop offers a gentle 12 km (about 7.5 miles) circuit through the tranquil Salland countryside. With virtually no elevation gain, this easy loop is ideal for walkers of all abilities, including families and those seeking a leisurely day outdoors.
Getting There Lettele is accessible by car via the N344 from Deventer, with parking available near the village center or at the local church, Sint Nicolaaskerk, which serves as a convenient landmark and starting point. For those using public transport, take a train to Deventer station and transfer to a local bus (such as line 160 or 161) toward Lettele; the bus stop at Lettele, Kerk is just steps from the trailhead.
Trail Experience and Navigation The loop meanders through a patchwork of farmland, meadows, and small woodlands, with well-marked paths and quiet country lanes. Navigation is straightforward, but for added confidence and up-to-date route information, HiiKER is recommended as your digital companion.
Landmarks and Points of Interest Shortly after leaving Lettele, the route passes the historic Sint Nicolaaskerk, a 19th-century church that anchors the village. At around 2 km (1.2 miles), the trail skirts the edge of the Voelker estate, a traditional Dutch farmstead with characteristic red-brick barns and grazing livestock. The landscape here is quintessentially rural, with wide skies, hedgerows, and the occasional windmill visible on the horizon.
Continuing north, the path follows the Menkveldweg, a quiet lane lined with old oaks and willows. At approximately 5 km (3.1 miles), walkers enter a small woodland, home to roe deer, foxes, and a variety of songbirds. In spring and early summer, wildflowers carpet the forest floor, attracting butterflies and bees.
Maandagsdijk and Rural Heritage The route’s namesake, Maandagsdijk, is a centuries-old dike that once protected the low-lying fields from seasonal flooding. Walking along this raised embankment at around 8 km (5 miles), you’ll enjoy panoramic views across the Salland plain. The dike is a reminder of the region’s long history of water management, a hallmark of Dutch rural life.
Wildlife and Nature Throughout the loop, keep an eye out for storks nesting atop farm buildings, hares darting through the fields, and buzzards circling overhead. The area is rich in hedgerows and small ponds, providing habitat for frogs, newts, and dragonflies.
Practical Tips The entire loop is flat, with a total elevation gain of less than 5 metres (16 feet), making it accessible year-round. Surfaces are a mix of paved lanes, gravel farm tracks, and grassy paths; sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain. There are few facilities along the route, so bring water and snacks. Lettele offers a café and a small shop for refreshments before or after your walk.
