Loop
“Wander through whispering woods, timeless estates, and golden fields on this enchanting Gelderland countryside loop.”
Starting from the charming town of Lochem in the eastern Netherlands, this 17 km (about 10.5 miles) loop trail offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all experience levels. The trailhead is conveniently located near Lochem’s train station, which is easily reached by direct train from Zutphen or Hengelo, and there is ample parking available for those arriving by car.
Getting Oriented and Navigation
The route is well-marked, but for added confidence and real-time navigation, HiiKER provides detailed maps and GPS tracking. The trail meanders through a patchwork of woodlands, open fields, and quiet rural lanes, offering a quintessential Dutch countryside experience.
Highlights Along the Route
Lochemse Berg and Paaschberg Within the first 3 km (1.9 miles), you’ll enter the Lochemse Berg, a low forested ridge that, despite its modest elevation, stands out in the otherwise flat landscape. The mixed deciduous woods here are home to roe deer, foxes, and a variety of songbirds. In spring, the forest floor is carpeted with wildflowers, while autumn brings a vibrant display of changing leaves.
Historical Estates and Landmarks Around the 7 km (4.3 miles) mark, the trail skirts the edge of the Ampsen Estate, a historic manor dating back to the 17th century. The estate grounds are dotted with ancient oaks and beech trees, and you may catch glimpses of the stately manor house through the foliage. This area is rich in history, with the estate having played a role in regional defense during the Eighty Years’ War.
Open Farmland and Canals Between 10 and 14 km (6.2–8.7 miles), the path opens up to expansive farmland and follows the banks of the Twentekanaal. This canal, constructed in the 1930s, is a vital waterway for the region and offers opportunities to spot waterfowl, herons, and the occasional kingfisher. The flat terrain here is ideal for a relaxed pace, and the open skies provide sweeping views across the countryside.
Wildlife and Flora
Throughout the loop, keep an eye out for buzzards circling overhead and listen for woodpeckers drumming in the trees. The hedgerows and meadows are alive with butterflies in summer, and the area’s diverse habitats support a healthy population of small mammals and amphibians.
Practical Information
There are several benches and picnic spots along the route, particularly near the Lochemse Berg and along the canal. Lochem itself offers a range of cafes and bakeries for pre- or post-hike refreshments. Public toilets are available at the train station and in the town center.
For those relying on public transport, trains to Lochem run regularly from major cities, and local buses connect the town with surrounding villages. If driving, set your navigation to Lochem train station for the most convenient access to the trailhead.
The Lochem Loop is a perfect introduction to the gentle beauty of the Gelderland region, blending natural scenery, historical sites, and the tranquility of rural Netherlands.
