Loop
“Wander through blossoming heath, timeless villages, and tranquil woodlands on this enchanting Achterhoek loop.”
Starting from the outskirts of Barchem, a small village in the Dutch province of Gelderland, this 24 km (about 15 miles) loop hike offers a gentle journey through the heart of the Achterhoek region. With virtually no elevation gain, the route is accessible for hikers of all abilities, making it ideal for those seeking a leisurely day outdoors. The trail weaves through a patchwork of farmland, woodland, and heath, with the Stelkampsveld nature reserve and the historic town of Borculo as highlights.
Getting There
Barchem is easily reached by public transport. The nearest major train station is in Lochem, about 6 km (3.7 miles) away. From Lochem, local buses run regularly to Barchem, with stops near the village center. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the village center or near the start of the trail at Barchem’s main church, the Dorpskerk Barchem, located at Barchemseweg 40, 7244 PA Barchem, Netherlands.
Trail Overview and Navigation
The route is well-marked and maintained, but carrying a digital map on HiiKER is recommended for real-time navigation and to explore optional detours. The terrain is mostly flat, with a mix of paved paths, forest tracks, and sandy trails. Expect to walk through open meadows, quiet woodlands, and along small streams.
Highlights and Points of Interest
*Stelkampsveld Nature Reserve* Roughly 7 km (4.3 miles) into the hike, you’ll enter the Stelkampsveld, a protected heathland and wetland area known for its biodiversity. In spring and summer, the reserve bursts with wildflowers, and you may spot rare butterflies, dragonflies, and ground-nesting birds. The area is managed to preserve its unique flora, including heather, bog myrtle, and sundew. Wooden boardwalks cross the wetter sections, making for easy passage even after rain.
*Borculo and Historical Significance* At about the halfway point, the trail skirts the edge of Borculo, a town with a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. Borculo was once a fortified settlement and played a strategic role in regional conflicts. The town is known for its watermills and the Berkel river, which powered local industry for centuries. If time allows, a short detour into Borculo reveals the Stormramp Museum, dedicated to the devastating flood of 1925, and the picturesque old town center.
*Woodlands and Farmland* The second half of the hike meanders through mixed forests and open fields, typical of the Achterhoek landscape. Tall oaks and beeches provide shade, while the farmland is dotted with traditional Dutch farmhouses. Wildlife is abundant—look for roe deer, hares, and a variety of songbirds. The peaceful rural scenery is punctuated by small streams and wooden bridges.
Practical Tips
There are several benches and picnic spots along the route, especially near Stelkampsveld and Borculo. Water and food are available in Barchem and Borculo, but it’s wise to carry snacks and water, especially outside of village centers. The trail is suitable for all seasons, though waterproof footwear is recommended after heavy rain due to occasional muddy patches in the nature reserve.
For navigation, HiiKER provides detailed maps and waypoints, ensuring you stay on track and can explore nearby points of interest. The entire loop can be completed in 6–7 hours at a relaxed pace, allowing plenty of time to enjoy the scenery and local heritage.
