Point-to-Point
“Meandering from stately gardens to ancient burial mounds, this soothing loop weaves history and nature together.”
Starting from the lush estate of Groot Warnsborn, just northwest of Arnhem, this 7 km (about 4.3 miles) loop offers a gentle, almost flat walk through some of the most historically and naturally rich landscapes in Gelderland. The trailhead is easily accessible by car, with parking available at Landgoed Groot Warnsborn (Bakenbergseweg 277, 6816 VP Arnhem). For those arriving by public transport, take a train to Arnhem Centraal and then bus 9 or 105 toward Schaarsbergen, alighting at the “Warnsborn” stop, which is a short walk from the estate entrance.
Woodland Paths and Estate Grounds
The route begins by weaving through the manicured gardens and ancient woodlands of Groot Warnsborn, a 19th-century estate known for its stately manor and landscaped park. The first kilometer (0.6 miles) is a gentle introduction, with broad beech avenues and occasional glimpses of roe deer or red squirrels darting through the undergrowth. In spring, carpets of wild garlic and bluebells line the forest floor, while autumn brings a spectacular display of golden leaves.
Lichtenbeek and the Airborne War Cemetery
After about 2 km (1.2 miles), the path crosses into the Lichtenbeek estate, a quieter, more secluded woodland with winding trails and small streams. This area is particularly rich in birdlife—listen for woodpeckers, nuthatches, and the melodic song of blackcaps. The trail then approaches the solemn Airborne War Cemetery at Oosterbeek, around the 3.5 km (2.2 miles) mark. This cemetery is the final resting place for over 1,700 soldiers, most of whom fell during the Battle of Arnhem in September 1944. The site is beautifully maintained and offers a poignant moment of reflection; interpretive panels provide context about Operation Market Garden and the fierce fighting that took place in these woods.
Grafheuvels and Ancient History
Continuing west, the route passes through open heathland dotted with ancient burial mounds, or “grafheuvels,” dating back to the Bronze Age. These low, grassy mounds are protected archaeological sites, and several are signposted with information about their origins and the prehistoric communities that once inhabited the Veluwezoom. The landscape here is open and airy, with sweeping views across the heath and occasional sightings of buzzards circling overhead.
Navigation and Trail Conditions
The entire route is well-marked, but carrying a digital map on HiiKER is recommended for real-time navigation and to explore alternative paths or nearby points of interest. The terrain is mostly firm and level, with only minor undulations—total elevation gain is negligible, making this an ideal walk for families or those seeking a relaxed pace. Sturdy walking shoes are advisable, especially after rain, as some sections can become muddy.
Practical Information
There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, particularly near the cemetery and on the open heath. Groot Warnsborn’s brasserie offers refreshments at the start or end of your walk, and public toilets are available at the estate. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a lead in nature reserves and near grazing livestock.
This route is a gentle immersion into the natural beauty and layered history of the Arnhem region, blending tranquil woodland, poignant war memorials, and echoes of ancient civilizations within a short, accessible hike.
