Loop
“Wander through blooming dunes and whispering forests, where history and wildlife color a tranquil coastal escape.”
Starting from the outskirts of Bergen aan Zee, a charming coastal village in the Netherlands, this 13 km (about 8 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain—perfect for those seeking an easy day out. The trailhead is conveniently located near the main beach entrance, making it accessible whether you arrive by car or public transport. If traveling by train, take a service to Alkmaar, then transfer to a local bus (such as line 866) that drops you within a short walk of the starting point.
Coastal Dunes and Forests
The route quickly immerses you in the North Holland Dune Reserve, a protected area renowned for its rolling sand dunes, open heath, and mixed woodlands. Early on, you’ll notice the landscape shift from sandy paths bordered by sea buckthorn and wild roses to denser pine and oak forests. The flat terrain makes for easy walking, and the well-marked paths are suitable for families and less experienced hikers. Keep an eye out for Highland cattle and Konik horses, which graze freely and help maintain the unique dune ecosystem.
Wildlife and Flora
Spring and summer bring a burst of color as wildflowers bloom along the trail, attracting butterflies and bees. Birdwatchers will appreciate the chance to spot species such as the European nightjar, woodpeckers, and various warblers. The area is also home to foxes and rabbits, which are often seen darting across the quieter sections of the path.
Historical and Cultural Highlights
About halfway through the loop, you’ll pass close to the historic Brettenpad, a route with roots dating back to medieval times when it served as a vital connection between coastal settlements. Interpretive signs along the way provide insight into the region’s history, including its role in water management and defense against the sea. The dunes themselves have been shaped over centuries by both natural forces and human intervention, with remnants of old bunkers from World War II occasionally visible just off the main path.
Navigation and Facilities
The entire loop is well-signposted, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to track your progress and ensure you stay on course. There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, particularly near the halfway mark, where you can pause for a snack and enjoy sweeping views of the dunes. Public restrooms and cafés are available at the start and end points in Bergen aan Zee.
Getting There and Practical Tips
Parking is available near the beach entrance, though it can fill up quickly on sunny weekends. If arriving by bus, the stop at Bergen aan Zee, Zeeweg is just a few minutes’ walk from the trailhead. Bring plenty of water, especially in summer, as there are limited refill points along the route. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash in certain sections to protect wildlife.
This loop is ideal for a relaxed day out, offering a blend of coastal scenery, rich biodiversity, and a touch of local history, all within easy reach of the picturesque Dutch coast.
