“Wander through storybook estates, tranquil forests, and wildflower meadows on this enchanting Gelderland journey.”
Embarking on the approximately 18 km (11 miles) hike connecting Kasteel De Voorst and Kasteel Het Velde via Binnen Weg offers a delightful journey through the Dutch countryside, rich in history and natural beauty. With virtually no elevation gain, this easy trail is suitable for hikers of all levels.
Starting Point and Access
The hike begins near the village of Eefde, located just northeast of Zutphen in the province of Gelderland. For those traveling by car, parking is available near Huis De Voorst, situated along the N348 road. If opting for public transport, buses from Zutphen serve Eefde regularly. From the bus stop, it's a short walk to the trailhead near Huis De Voorst.
Huis De Voorst
Constructed in 1695 for Arnold Joost van Keppel, a confidant of King William III, Huis De Voorst is an architectural gem designed by Jacobus Roman and Daniël Marot, who also contributed to the design of Paleis Het Loo. The estate features a central corps-de-logis connected to outbuildings by curved galleries. Although the main house is not open to the public, the surrounding grounds are accessible, offering picturesque views of the meticulously maintained gardens and the stately facade of the house.
Trail Route and Natural Highlights
Departing from Huis De Voorst, the trail meanders through serene woodlands and open fields characteristic of the Gelderland region. The path is well-marked and predominantly flat, making for a leisurely walk. Along the way, hikers can enjoy the diverse flora, including native wildflowers and mature oak and beech trees. Bird enthusiasts may spot species such as the European robin, great tit, and occasionally a buzzard soaring overhead.
Huis 't Velde
Approximately halfway through the hike, you'll arrive at Huis 't Velde, a stately white mansion with a history dating back to at least 1326. Managed by the Het Geldersch Landschap foundation, the house has served various purposes over the centuries and is currently used by the School for Police Leadership as a conference and study center. While the interior is not open to the public, the surrounding parkland is accessible, featuring well-maintained paths and a tranquil pond. Notably, the estate is home to the "Tuin van Bezinning," a national memorial garden honoring police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty since 1946. This serene garden is open to visitors and provides a space for reflection.
Wildlife and Environmental Considerations
The trail traverses diverse habitats, including deciduous forests, meadows, and wetlands. This variety supports a range of wildlife. Deer are occasionally seen in the early morning or late afternoon, and the area is home to various amphibians, such as frogs and newts, particularly near water bodies. To preserve these ecosystems, hikers are encouraged to stay on designated paths and minimize disturbances to wildlife.
Navigation and Safety
For precise navigation, hikers can utilize HiiKER, which provides detailed maps and route information. Given the flat terrain and well-maintained paths, the hike is considered easy. However, it's advisable to wear comfortable walking shoes and carry water, especially during warmer months. Always check the weather forecast before setting out and be prepared for changing conditions.
Return to Starting Point
Completing the loop brings you back to the vicinity of Huis De Voorst. If time permits, consider exploring the nearby town of Zutphen, known for its well-preserved medieval architecture and charming streets.
