Loop
“From bustling harbour to wildflower cliffs, Howth’s Green Loop dazzles with sea views and coastal charm.”
Starting from the charming village of Howth, just northeast of Dublin city, the Howth Cliff Path Loop - Green offers a scenic 8 km (5 miles) circuit with an elevation gain of about 200 metres (650 feet). The trailhead is conveniently located near Howth DART Station, making it easily accessible by public transport—simply take the DART train from Dublin city centre, and you’ll arrive within a few minutes’ walk of the starting point. For those arriving by car, parking is available at Howth Harbour or along Harbour Road, close to the station and the pier.
Trail Overview and Navigation
The loop begins by winding through the bustling harbour area, where fishing boats and seafood restaurants set a lively tone. The path quickly ascends, offering panoramic views over the Irish Sea and Dublin Bay. Hikers should use HiiKER for reliable navigation, as the route includes several junctions with other local trails. The Green Loop is well-marked, but fog and coastal weather can obscure signage, so digital navigation is recommended.
Landmarks and Natural Highlights
After leaving the harbour, the trail climbs towards the Baily Lighthouse, a striking 19th-century structure perched on the southeastern tip of the peninsula. At around 2 km (1.2 miles), the path skirts the edge of dramatic sea cliffs, with sheer drops and sweeping vistas—keep a safe distance from the edge, especially in windy conditions. The cliffs are home to seabirds such as kittiwakes, razorbills, and fulmars, and in spring and summer, wildflowers like sea thrift and heather add colour to the landscape.
At approximately 4 km (2.5 miles), the route passes near the ruins of the Martello Tower, one of several defensive structures built during the Napoleonic Wars. This section offers a glimpse into Howth’s strategic maritime history and provides excellent photo opportunities.
Flora, Fauna, and Terrain
The terrain alternates between rocky paths, grassy slopes, and sections of woodland. Expect some muddy patches after rain, especially in shaded areas. The coastal heath supports rabbits, foxes, and occasionally seals visible on the rocks below. The trail’s moderate difficulty comes from a few steep ascents and descents, particularly near the lighthouse and as the path loops back towards the village.
Returning to Howth Village
The final stretch descends gently through heathland and residential lanes, returning you to the heart of Howth. Here, you can explore the historic Howth Castle grounds or enjoy fresh seafood at the harbour. The entire loop typically takes 2–3 hours to complete, depending on pace and stops for sightseeing.
Hikers should bring sturdy footwear, weather-appropriate clothing, and water. The exposed cliffs can be windy and cool even in summer. Public toilets and refreshments are available in Howth village at both the start and end of the hike.
