This loop trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.### Getting There To reach the trailhead, you can drive to the small village of Hartsop, which is well-signposted from the A592 road. If you prefer public transport, the nearest train station is in Windermere. From Windermere, you can take a bus to Patterdale, and from there, it's a short taxi ride to Hartsop.### Trail Overview The trail begins in Hartsop, a quaint village nestled in the Lake District National Park. As you set off, you'll immediately be greeted by the serene beauty of the surrounding fells and valleys. The initial part of the hike is a steady ascent towards Stony Cove Pike, which stands at 763 meters (2,503 feet). The climb is gradual but consistent, offering panoramic views of the valleys below.### Stony Cove Pike At around 4 km (2.5 miles) into the hike, you'll reach the summit of Stony Cove Pike. This peak offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Lake District, including the distant peaks of Helvellyn and Fairfield. The terrain here is rocky, so take care with your footing.### St Raven's Edge Continuing along the ridge, you'll make your way to St Raven's Edge. This section of the trail is less steep but still offers plenty of elevation changes. The path is well-trodden and marked, making navigation straightforward. At approximately 7 km (4.3 miles), you'll find yourself at the edge, where the views are equally stunning. This is a great spot for a break and some photography.### Kirkstone Pass The descent towards Kirkstone Pass begins after St Raven's Edge. This part of the trail is more challenging due to its steepness and loose rocks. Trekking poles can be particularly useful here. Kirkstone Pass is one of the highest passes in the Lake District, and its historical significance dates back to Roman times when it was used as a trade route. At around 10 km (6.2 miles), you'll reach the pass, where you can take a moment to appreciate the historical context and the engineering marvel of the old Roman road.### Return to Hartsop From Kirkstone Pass, the trail loops back towards Hartsop. This final section is a gentle descent through lush meadows and alongside babbling brooks. The landscape here is rich with flora and fauna, including wildflowers and various bird species.
