Park Plantation, Carron Crag, Mires Wood and Grizedale Forest Loop

Starting near Westmorland and Furness, England, this 13 km (approximately 8 miles) loop trail offers a moderate challenge with an elevation gain of around 300 meters (about 984 feet). The trailhead is conveniently accessible by car, with parking available at the Grizedale Visitor Centre. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is in Windermere, from where you can take a bus to Hawkshead and then a short taxi ride to the visitor centre.

Park Plantation The journey begins in the Park Plantation area, where you'll be greeted by a dense canopy of mixed woodland. This section is relatively flat, making it a good warm-up for the more challenging parts ahead. Keep an eye out for red squirrels, a species that thrives in this habitat. Carron Crag As you approach Carron Crag, the trail starts to ascend more steeply. This is the highest point of the loop, offering panoramic views of the surrounding Lake District. Carron Crag itself is a notable landmark, with its rocky outcrops providing a stark contrast to the lush greenery. Historically, this area was used for quarrying, and you might still see remnants of old quarry sites.

Mires Wood Descending from Carron Crag, you'll enter Mires Wood, a tranquil section filled with ancient oak and beech trees. This part of the trail is relatively flat and offers a peaceful respite after the climb. The undergrowth here is rich with ferns and wildflowers, making it a great spot for nature photography. Birdwatchers will also find this area rewarding, with species like the great spotted woodpecker and nuthatch commonly seen.

Grizedale Forest The final section of the loop takes you through Grizedale Forest, a managed woodland known for its extensive network of trails and outdoor sculptures. The forest is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer and badgers. The trail here is well-maintained, with gentle undulations that make for a pleasant walk. Practical Information The entire loop takes around 4-5 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how often you stop to take in the sights.
