If driving, head towards Grasmere village, where parking is available. For those using public transport, the nearest major train station is Windermere. From Windermere, you can take a bus to Grasmere, which is well-connected by local bus services.### Trail Overview The trail begins near Grasmere, a charming village known for its association with the poet William Wordsworth. As you start your hike, you'll pass by Dove Cottage, Wordsworth's former home, which is now a museum dedicated to his life and works. This is a great spot to soak in some literary history before you embark on the trail.### Grasmere to Rydal Water The initial section of the trail takes you along the shores of Grasmere Lake. The path is relatively flat and easy, making it a good warm-up. After approximately 2 km (1.2 miles), you'll start to ascend towards Loughrigg Terrace. This section offers stunning panoramic views of Grasmere Lake and the surrounding fells. The climb is moderate, with an elevation gain of about 150 meters (490 feet).### Rydal Water and Rydal Cave Continuing on, you'll reach Rydal Water, another beautiful lake. The trail here is well-marked and follows the shoreline, offering picturesque views and opportunities for photography. About 5 km (3.1 miles) into the hike, you'll come across Rydal Cave, a large man-made cavern that is a popular spot for a short break. The cave is easily accessible and provides a unique geological feature to explore.### Fieldfoot Wood After leaving Rydal Water, the trail leads you into Fieldfoot Wood. The elevation gain in this section is gradual, adding another 100 meters (330 feet) over the next 3 km (1.9 miles).### Return to Grasmere The final leg of the loop takes you back towards Grasmere. The descent is gentle, making for a pleasant end to your journey.
