“Experience the enchanting 14 km journey through coastal splendor, wildlife havens, and historical whispers on the Spit and Salterns Way Loop.”
Embarking on the Spit, East Head and West Itchenor Country Park Loop via Salterns Way, hikers will experience a delightful 14 km (approximately 8.7 miles) journey through a varied landscape with minimal elevation gain, making it accessible to many. The loop trail, rated medium in difficulty, offers a blend of coastal views, lush countryside, and a taste of local history.### Getting to the TrailheadThe trailhead is conveniently located near West Sussex, England. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the starting point, which is typically near the Chichester Marina. Public transport users can catch a bus to the nearby village of Birdham, and from there, it's a short walk to the marina where the loop begins.### The Journey BeginsSetting out from the marina, the trail quickly immerses hikers in the serene atmosphere of the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The path leads towards the sandy spit of East Head, where the views of the harbour and the Solent are truly captivating. This area is a haven for birdwatchers, with a chance to spot oystercatchers, terns, and overwintering wildfowl.### Coastal Wonders and WildlifeAs the trail meanders along the coastline, the gentle lapping of the waves provides a soothing soundtrack. The flat terrain here is a mixture of sandy paths and boardwalks, which help to protect the delicate dune ecosystems. East Head is also home to a variety of plant species, including the rare and protected little tern.### Historical HighlightsContinuing on, the loop takes hikers inland towards West Itchenor, a village with a rich maritime history. Here, one can appreciate the traditional architecture and perhaps visit the historic church of St Nicholas, which dates back to the 12th century. The village's connection to shipbuilding and sailing is palpable, with many references to its nautical past.### Salterns WayThe trail then joins Salterns Way, a route that follows an old salt trade path. This section is characterized by its open fields and farmland, offering a contrast to the coastal scenery. The path is well-marked, and hikers can use the HiiKER app to navigate the route confidently.### Looping BackAs the loop curves back towards the marina, the final stretch provides a last glimpse of the harbour's tranquil waters. The return journey allows for reflection on the diverse landscapes encountered, from the bustling birdlife at East Head to the historical echoes in West Itchenor.### Trail Tips- Check the tide times before setting out, as parts of the trail can be affected by high tides. - Bring binoculars for birdwatching opportunities. - Wear appropriate footwear for sandy and potentially muddy sections. - Carry water and snacks, as there are limited facilities along the route. - Respect the natural habitat by staying on marked paths. This trail offers a rich tapestry of coastal beauty, wildlife, and history, providing an enjoyable experience for hikers of all levels.
