“Experience Surrey's natural beauty and historical intrigue on this challenging 19 km loop trail.”
Starting near Surrey, England, this 19 km (approximately 11.8 miles) loop trail offers a delightful mix of natural beauty and historical intrigue. With an elevation gain of around 500 meters (approximately 1,640 feet), this medium-difficulty hike is perfect for those looking to challenge themselves while enjoying the serene landscapes of the English countryside.### Getting There To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to Leith Hill, a well-known landmark in Surrey. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is Dorking, from where you can take a local bus or taxi to Leith Hill.### Trail Overview The trail begins near Leith Hill, the highest point in Southeast England, offering panoramic views that stretch as far as London on a clear day. The initial ascent is gradual, making it a good warm-up for the more challenging sections ahead.### Redlands Wood As you enter Redlands Wood, you'll be enveloped by a canopy of ancient trees. This section is relatively flat, allowing you to enjoy the rich biodiversity. Look out for native wildlife such as deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species. The forest floor is often carpeted with bluebells in the spring, adding a splash of color to your hike.### Leith Hill Tower Approximately 5 km (3.1 miles) into the hike, you'll reach Leith Hill Tower. Built in 1765, this Gothic tower stands 19 meters (62 feet) tall and offers an additional vantage point for breathtaking views. The tower has a small café where you can take a break and enjoy some refreshments.### Springace Copse Continuing on, you'll enter Springace Copse, a mixed woodland area known for its diverse flora. This section involves a moderate climb, gaining about 150 meters (492 feet) in elevation over 3 km (1.9 miles). The trail here is well-marked but can be muddy after rain, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended.### Hog Orchard Copse Around the 12 km (7.5 miles) mark, you'll find yourself in Hog Orchard Copse. This area is particularly rich in history, with remnants of ancient agricultural practices still visible. The trail here is relatively flat, making it a good place to catch your breath and enjoy the surroundings.### Navigation and Safety Given the varied terrain and dense woodland, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. The trail is well-marked, but intersections can be confusing, especially in the wooded sections.### Final Stretch The last 4 km (2.5 miles) of the trail take you through open fields and meadows, gradually descending back towards the starting point. This section offers a different kind of beauty, with wide-open spaces and the occasional farm animal grazing peacefully.### Historical Significance Leith Hill and its surrounding areas have a rich history dating back to the Iron Age. The hill itself was a strategic lookout point, and the tower was built as a "prospect house" by Richard Hull, who is buried beneath it. The agricultural history of Hog Orchard Copse adds another layer of historical depth to your hike. This loop trail offers a comprehensive experience of Surrey's natural and historical treasures, making it a must-visit for any hiking enthusiast.
