Ockley is known for its picturesque cottages and historic buildings, some dating back to the 16th century. As you leave the village, you'll pass through open fields and meadows, offering a peaceful start to your hike.#### Woodland Paths About 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll enter dense woodlands. The trail here is well-marked but can be muddy after rain, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species. The woodland area is also home to ancient oak and beech trees, some of which are centuries old.#### Leith Hill Tower At approximately 4.5 km (2.8 miles), you'll reach the highlight of the hike: Leith Hill Tower. Standing at 294 meters (965 feet) above sea level, this Gothic tower offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. On a clear day, you can see as far as the English Channel to the south and the London skyline to the north. The tower itself has historical significance, having been built in 1765 by Richard Hull as a place for people to enjoy the panoramic views. There is a small fee to climb the tower, but it's well worth it for the vistas.### Flora and Fauna The trail is rich in biodiversity. In spring and summer, the meadows are awash with wildflowers, including bluebells, primroses, and foxgloves. The woodlands provide a habitat for various species of fungi, mosses, and lichens. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the presence of woodpeckers, nuthatches, and even the occasional buzzard soaring overhead.### Historical Significance Leith Hill and its surrounding areas have a rich history. The hill itself has been a site of human activity since the Bronze Age, and the nearby village of Ockley was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. The area was also significant during the English Civil War, with several skirmishes taking place in the surrounding countryside.### Practical Information The trail is well-maintained but can be uneven in places, so it's advisable to bring trekking poles if you have them. There are no facilities along the trail, so carry enough water and snacks for the journey. The return trip follows the same path, allowing you to enjoy the scenery from a different perspective on your way back to Ockley. This hike offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and physical challenge, making it a must-do for anyone visiting Surrey.
