Loop
“Wander ancient woodlands and lofty hills, soaking in Surrey’s ever-changing colours, wildlife, and timeless views.”
Starting from the village of Coldharbour, just south of Dorking in Surrey, this 27 km (about 16.8 miles) loop offers a gentle yet rewarding journey through the heart of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With an elevation gain of around 400 metres (1,312 feet), the route is accessible for most walkers, making it a perfect choice for those seeking a longer but manageable day out.Getting ThereColdharbour is easily reached by car, with parking available near the Plough Inn, a well-known local pub. For those using public transport, Dorking railway station is the nearest major stop, with regular services from London and the south coast. From Dorking, local buses or a short taxi ride will bring you to the trailhead in Coldharbour.Leith Hill: Surrey’s Highest PointThe route begins with a steady climb through woodland and open pasture, soon reaching Leith Hill, the highest summit in Southeast England at 294 metres (965 feet). The iconic Leith Hill Tower, built in 1765, stands atop the hill and offers panoramic views across the Weald and, on clear days, as far as London and the South Downs. The tower is open to visitors on weekends and holidays, and its viewing platform is a highlight for many hikers.Pasture Wood and WildlifeDescending from Leith Hill, the trail meanders through Pasture Wood, a tranquil area of ancient woodland managed by the National Trust. Here, the path is lined with bluebells in spring and alive with birdsong year-round. Look out for nuthatches, woodpeckers, and the occasional deer. The woodland floor is dotted with wildflowers, and the dappled light creates a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for a mid-hike pause.Holmbury Hill and Historic EarthworksThe next significant ascent brings you to Holmbury Hill, another prominent summit at 261 metres (856 feet). This hill is notable for its Iron Age hillfort, with visible earthworks dating back over 2,000 years. The summit provides sweeping views over the patchwork fields and forests of Surrey, and is a popular spot for a picnic. The area is rich in history, with evidence of ancient settlements and long-standing woodland management practices.Navigation and Trail ConditionsThe loop is well-marked, but due to the network of intersecting paths and bridleways, using HiiKER for navigation is highly recommended. The terrain is mostly gentle, with a mix of forest tracks, open fields, and some short, steeper sections on the hills. After rain, some paths can become muddy, especially in the woods, so waterproof footwear is advisable.Flora, Fauna, and Seasonal HighlightsThroughout the year, the route offers changing scenery: carpets of bluebells and wild garlic in spring, lush green canopies in summer, vibrant autumn foliage, and crisp, clear views in winter. Birdlife is abundant, and you may spot buzzards circling overhead or hear the distinctive call of the tawny owl at dusk. The area is also home to badgers, foxes, and a variety of butterflies.Facilities and RefreshmentsThere are several opportunities to stop for refreshments, including the Plough Inn at Coldharbour and the King’s Head in Holmbury St Mary. Both offer traditional fare and a warm welcome to walkers. Public toilets are available at Leith Hill Tower and in Holmbury St Mary. This loop provides a varied and scenic introduction to the Surrey Hills, blending natural beauty, wildlife, and centuries of history into a single, accessible adventure.
