Trail Overview
The trail begins with a gentle ascent through lush woodlands, offering a serene start to your hike. As you make your way up, you'll gain approximately 100 meters (328 feet) in elevation, which is spread out over the first 2 km (1.2 miles). This initial climb is moderate and provides ample opportunities to pause and take in the surrounding flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for native wildlife such as red deer and a variety of bird species, including buzzards and kestrels.
Selworthy Beacon
At around the 2 km (1.2 miles) mark, you'll reach Selworthy Beacon, one of the highest points in Exmoor National Park. Standing at 308 meters (1,010 feet) above sea level, the beacon offers panoramic views of the Bristol Channel, the Quantock Hills, and even South Wales on a clear day. This is an excellent spot for a rest and some photography. The beacon itself has historical significance, having been used as a signaling point during the Spanish Armada in 1588.
Bury Castle
Continuing along the trail, you'll descend slightly before reaching Bury Castle, an Iron Age hill fort located approximately 3.5 km (2.2 miles) into the hike. The fort's earthworks are still visible, and it's fascinating to imagine the ancient community that once thrived here. This section of the trail is relatively flat and offers a peaceful walk through open moorland, with heather and gorse adding splashes of color to the landscape.
Return to Selworthy
The final leg of the hike takes you back through the charming village of Selworthy. As you approach the village, you'll pass by Selworthy Green, a collection of thatched cottages that are quintessentially English. The village itself is part of the Holnicote Estate, owned by the National Trust, and is worth exploring if you have time. The trail concludes back at the Selworthy Church, where you can take a moment to visit the churchyard and enjoy the views over the surrounding countryside.
Navigation and Preparation
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool will enhance your experience and ensure you stay on track. Wear sturdy hiking boots, as the terrain can be uneven, especially after rain. Bring water and snacks, as there are no facilities along the trail.
