As you set off, the first section of the trail takes you through the charming village of Charlbury. This area is steeped in history, with its roots dating back to the Anglo-Saxon period. Keep an eye out for the St. Mary’s Church, a beautiful example of Norman architecture.
After leaving Charlbury, the trail leads you into the serene Dean Grove. This ancient woodland is part of the larger Wychwood Forest, which was once a royal hunting ground. The forest is rich in biodiversity, home to a variety of bird species such as woodpeckers and owls, as well as mammals like deer and foxes. The dense canopy and the undergrowth provide a habitat for numerous plant species, including bluebells in the spring.
As you continue, you will come across remnants of the Wychwood Forest's historical significance. The forest was once part of a royal hunting ground established by the Normans, and you may notice old boundary markers and ancient trees that have stood the test of time. The Wychwood Project, a local conservation effort, works to preserve this historical landscape and its natural beauty.
The trail then transitions from dense woodland to open fields and farmland. This section offers expansive views of the Oxfordshire countryside. The fields are often dotted with grazing sheep and cattle, and you might even spot a red kite soaring overhead. The path here is well-trodden and easy to follow, making it a pleasant walk even for those who are less experienced.
As you loop back towards Charlbury, the trail takes you past the Cornbury Park estate. This private estate is not open to the public, but its historical significance is worth noting. Cornbury Park has been a site of human activity since the Bronze Age and has served various roles, from a royal hunting lodge to a modern-day private residence.
The entire loop is around 7 km (4.3 miles) and should take approximately 2-3 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how often you stop to take in the sights. There are no significant elevation changes, making it a relatively easy hike, but the varied terrain can present some moderate challenges. Wear sturdy walking shoes, and bring water and snacks, as there are no facilities along the trail.
Using the HiiKER app will ensure you stay on track and can fully enjoy the natural and historical beauty of the Dean Grove via Wychwood Way trail.
