βThe Arlingham and River Severn Loop combines serene riverside paths, charming countryside, and rich history for all.β
Starting near the picturesque village of Arlingham in Gloucestershire, England, the Arlingham and River Severn Loop is a delightful 7 km (approximately 4.3 miles) loop trail with no significant elevation gain, making it accessible for most hikers. This trail offers a blend of serene riverside walking, charming countryside, and glimpses into the region's rich history.### Getting There To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Arlingham, which is well-signposted from the A38. Parking is available near the village center. For those using public transport, the nearest major town is Gloucester. From Gloucester, you can take a bus to Frampton-on-Severn and then a local taxi to Arlingham.### Trail Overview The trail begins in the heart of Arlingham village, where you can admire traditional English cottages and the historic St. Mary the Virgin Church. As you set off, the path leads you towards the River Severn, one of the longest rivers in the UK.### Riverside Walk Approximately 1.5 km (0.9 miles) into the hike, you will reach the riverbank. The trail follows the Severn Way, a long-distance footpath that traces the river's course. Here, you can enjoy stunning views of the river, especially during high tide when the water level rises dramatically. Keep an eye out for various bird species, including herons and kingfishers, which are commonly seen along this stretch.### Historical Significance Around the 3 km (1.9 miles) mark, you will come across the remnants of the old Severn Railway Bridge, which once connected Sharpness and Lydney. Although the bridge was dismantled in the 1960s, the remaining piers stand as a testament to the area's industrial past. This section of the trail offers a unique glimpse into the region's history and the importance of the River Severn in trade and transportation.### Countryside and Wildlife As you loop back towards Arlingham, the trail meanders through lush meadows and farmland. This part of the hike is particularly scenic in spring and summer when wildflowers are in full bloom. The flat terrain makes it easy to spot local wildlife, including rabbits, foxes, and a variety of songbirds.### Navigation and Safety The trail is well-marked, but it's always wise to carry a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track. The path can be muddy after rain, so waterproof footwear is recommended. There are no significant elevation changes, but some sections near the river can be slippery, so take care.### Final Stretch The last 2 km (1.2 miles) of the loop bring you back into Arlingham village. This is a great opportunity to explore more of the village's charm or stop by a local pub for a well-deserved refreshment. The entire hike typically takes around 2-3 hours, depending on your pace and how often you stop to take in the sights. This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and rural tranquility, making it a rewarding experience for hikers of all levels.
