Loop
“Bask in ancient woodland, shimmering lakes, and sweeping vistas on this enchanting Epping Forest adventure.”
Nestled in the heart of Epping Forest, this loop begins near Connaught Water, a tranquil lake just off Rangers Road, Chingford, London E4 7QH. The trail covers approximately 24 km (about 15 miles) with a gentle elevation gain of around 200 metres (650 feet), making it accessible for most walkers and ideal for those seeking a full day’s immersion in nature without strenuous climbs.Getting There
For those arriving by public transport, Chingford Station is the nearest rail stop, just a 15-minute walk from Connaught Water. Regular trains run from London Liverpool Street, making it an easy journey from central London. If driving, parking is available at the Connaught Water car park, accessible from Rangers Road.Connaught Water and Early Woodland
The loop starts at Connaught Water, a picturesque lake popular with birdwatchers. Early in the walk, expect to see swans, herons, and a variety of waterfowl. The path meanders through ancient woodland, with towering oak, hornbeam, and beech trees providing a canopy overhead. In spring and summer, the undergrowth bursts with bluebells and wild garlic, while autumn brings a spectacular display of golden leaves.Strawberry Hill and Historic Epping Forest
About 8 km (5 miles) in, the route ascends gently toward Strawberry Hill, one of the highest points in Epping Forest. The elevation here is modest but offers sweeping views across the woodland. Epping Forest itself is steeped in history, once a royal hunting ground dating back to the Norman conquest. The forest is dotted with ancient earthworks and boundary markers, remnants of its storied past.Wildlife and Natural Highlights
Keep an eye out for fallow and muntjac deer, especially in the quieter stretches between Strawberry Hill and High Beach. The forest is also home to foxes, badgers, and a rich variety of birdlife, including woodpeckers and nuthatches. The diverse habitats—wetlands, heath, and dense woodland—make this loop a haven for nature enthusiasts.Navigating the Route
The trail is well-marked, but the network of paths in Epping Forest can be confusing. For reliable navigation, use HiiKER, which provides detailed maps and GPS guidance for the entire loop. The terrain is mostly flat with a few gentle inclines, and the paths are a mix of gravel, dirt, and woodland tracks. After heavy rain, some sections can become muddy, so waterproof footwear is recommended.Points of Interest and Facilities
At around the halfway mark, High Beach offers a welcome rest stop with a café and public toilets. This area is also home to the Epping Forest Visitor Centre, where you can learn more about the forest’s ecology and history. The loop passes several ancient pollarded trees, some over 400 years old, and crosses the historic Green Ride, a centuries-old trackway.Returning to Connaught Water
The final stretch winds back through peaceful glades and open clearings, eventually returning to the lakeside. Benches along the water’s edge provide a perfect spot to relax and watch the resident wildlife before heading home. This loop is a rewarding journey through one of London’s most historic and biodiverse green spaces, suitable for walkers of all abilities and easily accessible from the city.
