Bostal Hill, Beddingham Hill and Alfriston Cuntry Park Loop

Starting near East Sussex, England, this 21 km (approximately 13 miles) loop trail offers a moderate challenge with an elevation gain of around 400 meters (1,312 feet). The trailhead is conveniently located near the village of Alfriston, which can be accessed by car or public transport. If you're driving, parking is available at the Alfriston Clergy House, a National Trust property. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is Berwick, from where you can catch a bus or taxi to Alfriston.

Initial Ascent and Bostal Hill

The trail begins with a gradual ascent towards Bostal Hill. This initial climb is about 3 km (1.9 miles) long and gains approximately 150 meters (492 feet) in elevation. As you ascend, you'll be treated to panoramic views of the South Downs National Park. The chalk grasslands here are home to a variety of wildflowers, especially in the spring and summer months, including orchids and cowslips.

Beddingham Hill and Historical Significance

Continuing from Bostal Hill, the trail leads you to Beddingham Hill, another significant elevation point. This section is about 5 km (3.1 miles) from the start and involves a further elevation gain of 100 meters (328 feet). Beddingham Hill is steeped in history, with evidence of ancient settlements and burial mounds. The area was once inhabited by the Saxons, and you might come across remnants of their presence in the form of earthworks and old pathways.

Alfriston Country Park and Wildlife

As you descend from Beddingham Hill, the trail takes you through Alfriston Country Park. This section is relatively flat and stretches for about 6 km (3.7 miles). The park is a haven for birdwatchers, with species such as skylarks, kestrels, and buzzards frequently spotted. The Cuckmere River meanders through the park, providing a serene backdrop and opportunities for spotting waterfowl and other aquatic wildlife.

Navigation and Safety

Given the moderate difficulty of the trail, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track. The trail is well-marked, but having a digital map can be invaluable, especially in areas where the path might be less distinct.

Return to Alfriston

The final leg of the loop brings you back to Alfriston, covering the remaining 7 km (4.3 miles). This section is a mix of gentle inclines and flat terrain, making for a pleasant end to your hike. As you approach Alfriston, you'll pass by the historic St. Andrew's Church, also known as the "Cathedral of the Downs," a beautiful 14th-century structure worth a visit.
