If driving, you can park near the village of Castleton, which is a well-known starting point. For those using public transport, Castleton is accessible by bus from nearby towns such as Sheffield and Manchester. The nearest train station is in Hope, from where you can catch a bus or take a short taxi ride to Castleton.### Trail Overview The trail begins in Castleton, a picturesque village known for its charming stone cottages and historic sites. As you start your hike, you'll head towards Mam Tor, also known as the "Shivering Mountain." This part of the trail involves a steady climb, gaining approximately 200 meters (656 feet) in elevation over the first 2 km (1.2 miles). The summit of Mam Tor offers panoramic views of the surrounding Peak District, including the Hope Valley and Edale.### Mam Tor to Back Tor From Mam Tor, the trail continues along the Great Ridge, a well-trodden path that connects Mam Tor to Back Tor. This section is relatively flat and offers stunning vistas on both sides. The distance between Mam Tor and Back Tor is about 3 km (1.9 miles), with minimal elevation change. Along the way, you'll pass Hollins Cross, a notable waypoint where several paths intersect.### Back Tor to Speedwell Cavern After reaching Back Tor, the trail descends towards Speedwell Cavern. This descent covers approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) and drops around 150 meters (492 feet) in elevation. Speedwell Cavern is one of the four show caves in the Castleton area and offers a unique underground boat tour through a flooded mine. If you have time, it's worth taking a detour to explore this fascinating subterranean world.### Return to Castleton The final leg of the loop takes you back to Castleton, covering the remaining 4 km (2.5 miles) with a gentle descent.
