“Experience stunning vistas, challenging climbs, and rich history on Nether Wasdale's rewarding 13-kilometer loop trail.”
Starting near the charming village of Nether Wasdale in Cumberland, England, this loop trail spans approximately 13 kilometers (8 miles) with an elevation gain of around 800 meters (2,625 feet). The trailhead is conveniently accessible by car, with parking available near the village. For those using public transport, the nearest significant landmark is the Wasdale Head Inn, which can be reached by local bus services from larger towns such as Whitehaven or Seascale.Initial Ascent and Middle FellThe hike begins with a steady ascent towards Middle Fell. The initial climb is moderate, offering panoramic views of Wast Water, England's deepest lake. As you gain elevation, the terrain becomes rockier, and the path can be slippery after rain, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. At approximately 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) into the hike, you'll reach the summit of Middle Fell, standing at 582 meters (1,909 feet). From here, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding fells and valleys.Seatallan SummitContinuing from Middle Fell, the trail descends slightly before beginning the climb to Seatallan. This section is more challenging, with steeper gradients and uneven ground. The ascent to Seatallan, which peaks at 692 meters (2,270 feet), is about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) from Middle Fell. The summit offers expansive views of the Lake District, including Scafell Pike, the highest peak in England. This area is also rich in wildlife; keep an eye out for red deer and various bird species such as the peregrine falcon.Buckbarrow DescentFrom Seatallan, the trail descends towards Buckbarrow. This part of the hike is less strenuous but requires careful navigation due to the rocky terrain. Using a navigation tool like HiiKER can be particularly helpful here. The descent to Buckbarrow, which stands at 423 meters (1,388 feet), is approximately 2.5 kilometers (1.6 miles) from Seatallan. Buckbarrow offers a unique vantage point over the Wasdale Valley and is a great spot for a rest and some photography.Return to Nether WasdaleThe final leg of the loop takes you back to Nether Wasdale, covering around 5.5 kilometers (3.4 miles). This section is mostly downhill and passes through picturesque meadows and woodlands. Along the way, you'll encounter several small streams and possibly some grazing sheep. The path here is well-trodden and easier to navigate, making for a pleasant end to the hike.Historical SignificanceThe region around Nether Wasdale is steeped in history. The village itself dates back to medieval times and features several historic buildings, including St. Michael and All Angels Church, which has origins in the 12th century. The area was also significant during the Industrial Revolution, with remnants of old mining activities visible along the trail. This loop trail offers a mix of challenging climbs, stunning vistas, and rich historical context, making it a rewarding experience for hikers of medium skill level.
