Cross Northgate at the zebra crossing near The Angel pub, passing public toilets on the left. Before the cattle grid, take a diagonal left turn into a rough car park, passing in front of the former Waterworks building, now the Baildon Golf Club. Proceed through the gate onto the moor. The ascent up Baildon Hill is gradual, offering panoramic views of the Aire Valley. The terrain consists of well-trodden paths interspersed with gritstone outcrops. Be prepared for uneven surfaces and potential muddy patches, especially after rain.Acrehowe HillContinuing from Baildon Hill, the trail leads to Acrehowe Hill, notable for its archaeological significance. The area features remnants of a ring cairn, known as Acrehowe Circle, dating back to prehistoric times. Although the original structure has been disturbed over centuries, the site offers insight into ancient burial practices. The surrounding landscape is dotted with bell pits, indicative of historical mining activities. These small, circular depressions are remnants of early coal extraction methods.Hope HillThe path then ascends to Hope Hill, characterized by open moorland and expansive views. This section of the trail is less sheltered, so be prepared for potential wind exposure. The terrain here is relatively flat, making for a pleasant walk across the moor. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including ground-nesting birds and occasional sightings of deer.Historical SignificanceThe region is rich in history, with evidence of human activity dating back to the Bronze Age. Baildon Moor, encompassing parts of this trail, is home to numerous prehistoric cup and ring marks etched into gritstone outcrops. These carvings are believed to have held ritualistic significance. Additionally, the area was a hub for mining during the 13th century, with ironstone extraction being a prominent industry. The numerous bell pits scattered across the moor are testaments to this bygone era.Flora and FaunaThe moorlands are adorned with heather and bilberry shrubs, providing a vibrant purple hue during late summer. Wooded sections, particularly near Shipley Glen, are home to ancient oak and beech trees. Bird enthusiasts can spot species such as curlews, lapwings, and skylarks. The area also supports a variety of mammals, including foxes and hares.Navigation and SafetyWhile the trail is generally well-marked, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool.
