“"Discover Hidden Falls on a stunning 2km forested trail, rich in wildlife and historical charm."”
To reach the trailhead for the Hidden Falls via Boat Dock Trail, head towards Teton County, Wyoming. If you're driving, you can park at the Jenny Lake Visitor Center, which is the nearest significant landmark. From there, you can take a shuttle boat across Jenny Lake to the boat dock, which is the starting point of the trail. If you're using public transport, the START Bus service from Jackson, Wyoming, can get you close to the visitor center, but you may need a taxi or rideshare for the final leg.
The Hidden Falls via Boat Dock Trail is an out-and-back trail that spans approximately 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) with no significant elevation gain, making it accessible for most hikers. Despite its relatively short distance, the trail is rated as medium difficulty due to some uneven terrain and rocky sections.
From the boat dock, the trail begins with a well-marked path that meanders through a lush forest of lodgepole pines and Douglas firs. The trail is well-maintained but can be rocky in sections, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. Using the HiiKER app can help you stay on track and provide real-time updates on trail conditions.
About 0.5 kilometers (0.3 miles) into the hike, you will encounter a junction. Take the right fork to continue towards Hidden Falls. The left fork leads to the Cascade Canyon Trail, which is a longer and more strenuous hike.
As you proceed, keep an eye out for local wildlife. The area is home to mule deer, black bears, and a variety of bird species, including the striking Steller's jay. The dense forest canopy provides ample shade, making this a pleasant hike even on warmer days.
The region around Jenny Lake has a rich history. The lake itself was named after Jenny Leigh, the Shoshone wife of an early trapper named Richard "Beaver Dick" Leigh. The area was a significant hunting ground for Native American tribes long before European settlers arrived.
Approximately 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) from the start, you will begin to hear the sound of rushing water. The trail becomes slightly steeper and rockier as you approach Hidden Falls, but the effort is well worth it. The falls are a stunning 100-foot (30-meter) cascade that tumbles down a series of rocky ledges, creating a mesmerizing display of natural beauty.
There are several vantage points from which to view the falls, and it's a great spot to take a break and enjoy a snack. Remember to pack out all trash to keep the trail pristine for future hikers.
After soaking in the beauty of Hidden Falls, retrace your steps back to the boat dock. The return journey offers a different perspective of the forest and lake, so take your time and enjoy the serene surroundings. Once back at the boat dock, you can catch the shuttle boat back to the Jenny Lake Visitor Center.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, wildlife, and a touch of historical significance, making it a must-do for anyone visiting the Grand Teton National Park.
