โEmbark on a challenging yet rewarding hike to Clear West Peak, offering stunning views and rich history.โ
To reach the trailhead for the Clear West Peak via Clearwater Peak Trail, head towards Pierce County, Washington. If you're driving, you can park near the Clearwater Wilderness area, which is accessible via State Route 165. For those using public transport, the nearest significant landmark is the town of Carbonado, from where you might need to arrange a taxi or rideshare to the trailhead.Starting your hike, the trail begins with a gentle ascent through a dense forest of Douglas fir and western hemlock. The first 0.5 km (0.3 miles) is relatively easy, allowing you to acclimate to the surroundings. As you progress, the trail becomes steeper, gaining approximately 100 meters (328 feet) in elevation over the next 1 km (0.6 miles).### Mid-Trail Landmarks and WildlifeAround the 1.5 km (0.9 miles) mark, you'll encounter a small clearing that offers your first glimpse of the surrounding peaks. This is a great spot to take a short break and hydrate. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as black-tailed deer and various bird species, including the Steller's jay and the northern flicker.Continuing on, the trail narrows and becomes rockier, requiring careful footing. Over the next 0.5 km (0.3 miles), you'll gain another 100 meters (328 feet) in elevation. This section is particularly scenic, with views of the Clearwater River valley below. The flora changes as well, with more alpine vegetation like huckleberries and mountain heather.### Historical SignificanceThe region has a rich history, with the Clearwater Wilderness being part of the traditional lands of the Puyallup Tribe. The area was also explored by early European settlers in the 19th century, who were drawn by the promise of timber and mineral resources. Remnants of old logging roads can still be seen intersecting the trail at various points.### Final Ascent and Peak ViewsThe final stretch to Clear West Peak is the most challenging, with a steep ascent over the last 1 km (0.6 miles) gaining approximately 100 meters (328 feet) in elevation. The trail here is less maintained, so using a navigation tool like HiiKER is highly recommended to stay on track.Upon reaching the summit, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Cascade Range, including a stunning vista of Mount Rainier to the south. On a clear day, you can also see the Olympic Mountains to the west. The peak is a perfect spot for a well-deserved rest and some photography. After soaking in the views, retrace your steps back to the trailhead, making sure to leave no trace and respect the natural environment. The descent is quicker but still requires caution, especially on the steeper, rockier sections.
