Starting your adventure near Lewis County, Washington, the Foss Peak via Unicorn Peak and Pinnacle Peak Trail offers a challenging yet rewarding loop trail that spans approximately 12 km (7.5 miles) with an elevation gain of around 1000 meters (3280 feet). This trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for hikers with some experience and a good level of fitness.### Getting There To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transportation. If driving, head towards the nearest significant landmark, which is the Nisqually Entrance of Mount Rainier National Park. From there, follow the signs to the Snow Lake Trailhead parking area. For those using public transport, the nearest major city is Seattle. From Seattle, you can take a bus or train to Ashford, WA, and then a local taxi or shuttle service to the trailhead.### Trail Overview The trail begins at the Snow Lake Trailhead, where you will start your ascent through dense forest. The initial part of the trail is relatively gentle, allowing you to warm up as you navigate through towering trees and lush undergrowth. After about 2 km (1.2 miles), you will reach a fork; take the left path to continue towards Unicorn Peak.### Unicorn Peak As you approach Unicorn Peak, the trail becomes steeper and more rugged. This section involves some scrambling, so be prepared with appropriate footwear and possibly trekking poles. The climb to Unicorn Peak offers stunning views of the surrounding valleys and distant peaks. Here, you can take a moment to enjoy panoramic views and perhaps spot some local wildlife, such as marmots and mountain goats.### Pinnacle Peak From Unicorn Peak, the trail descends slightly before ascending again towards Pinnacle Peak. This section is less strenuous but still requires careful footing. Pinnacle Peak is located about 6 km (3.7 miles) from the trailhead and offers another excellent vantage point. The elevation here is slightly lower than Unicorn Peak, but the views are equally breathtaking. Look out for alpine meadows filled with wildflowers during the summer months.### Foss Peak Continuing on, the trail leads you towards Foss Peak. This part of the hike is less traveled and offers a sense of solitude. The trail here is narrow and can be overgrown in places, so keep an eye on your navigation tools, such as HiiKER, to stay on track. Foss Peak is the final summit on this loop, located around 8 km (5 miles) from the start. This section can be slippery, especially after rain, so take your time. The trail eventually loops back to the initial fork, where you will retrace your steps for the final 2 km (1.2 miles) back to the Snow Lake Trailhead.### Historical Significance The region around Mount Rainier has a rich history, with the mountain itself being a sacred site for the indigenous tribes of the Pacific Northwest.
