If driving, head towards the Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park, where ample parking is available near the Red Town Trailhead. For those using public transport, King County Metro Transit offers bus services that can get you close to the park. From the nearest bus stop, it's a short walk to the trailhead.### Trail Navigation For navigation, it’s highly recommended to use HiiKER, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates. Starting from the Red Town Trailhead, the Shy Bear Trail takes you through dense forests filled with towering Douglas firs and western red cedars. About 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) in, you’ll encounter Coal Creek Falls, a picturesque waterfall that’s especially vibrant in the spring. The trail continues to wind through the forest, offering occasional glimpses of local wildlife such as deer and various bird species.#### Wilderness Cliffs Trail At approximately the 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) mark, you’ll transition onto the Wilderness Cliffs Trail. This section is more challenging, with steeper inclines that lead to breathtaking viewpoints. The climb rewards you with panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and, on clear days, even the distant peaks of the Cascade Range. The highest point on this trail is about 400 meters (1,312 feet) above sea level, providing a perfect spot for a rest and some photography.### Historical Significance The area around Cougar Mountain has a rich history, particularly related to coal mining in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As you hike, you may notice remnants of old mining operations, including rusted machinery and abandoned mine shafts.
