Starting your adventure near San Juan County, Utah, the Basin Overlook, Dead Horse Point, and Meander Overlook Loop is a captivating 8 km (5 miles) loop trail with an elevation gain of approximately 700 meters (2,300 feet). This trail offers a moderate challenge, making it suitable for hikers with some experience.
#### Basin Overlook Approximately 1.5 km (0.9 miles) into the hike, you'll reach the Basin Overlook. This vantage point provides sweeping views of the vast basin below, characterized by its rugged terrain and striking rock formations. The overlook is a great spot for photography, so make sure to bring your camera.
#### Dead Horse Point Continuing along the trail, around the 4 km (2.5 miles) mark, you'll arrive at Dead Horse Point. This iconic overlook is steeped in history and legend. According to local lore, cowboys once used the point as a natural corral for wild mustangs, but the horses tragically died of thirst within sight of the Colorado River. The panoramic views from here are nothing short of spectacular, showcasing the winding river and the dramatic cliffs that define the region.
#### Meander Overlook As you progress further, about 6 km (3.7 miles) into the hike, you'll come to the Meander Overlook. This spot offers a unique perspective of the river's serpentine path through the canyon. The overlook is aptly named for the river's meandering course, which has carved out intricate patterns in the landscape over millennia.
