A great hike for youngsters, a loop of just 2.5km, the history rich Karangahake Windows Walk begins from the Karangahake Reserve car park. Crossing over the Ohinemuri River and then the Lower Waitawheta Forge, discover the old, abandoned buildings and gold mining machinery ruins of Talisman battery. Venture into old gold mining tunnels, with windows that look down on the spectacular gorge far below and which give the trail its name. Return to the car park on the opposite flank of the gorge, along the Crown Tramway Track. Rated as easy, dogs are not allowed. Allow a couple of hours to complete the trail and explore the ruins and tunnels.
