Beginning in Rawhiti, a beach town on the Cape Brett Peninsula in the northern part of the North Island, this is a 16.5 km trail over rugged terrain. From the high ridges you will see the dramatic coastal scenery and may be able to spot seals and dolphins coming in close to shore. This hike is around 8 hours long, although due to its many steep sections it may take longer, especially after Deep Water Cove where the trail becomes more challenging and exposed, often with sheer drops to the sea below. For more info, click here. You must remain on the trail at all times and not take any short cuts and make sure that you have enough daylight to complete the trail before setting off. The trail finishes at Cape Brett Lighthouse which offers spectacular views over the Bay of Islands. Here there is a 23 bunk hut, which needs to be booked beforehand, please visit here for more information. Note that drinking water may not be available, although cooking water (salty) is. Dogs are not permitted on the trail and there is both a track maintenance fee and a fee for the hut. The trail is graded as advanced. For information on how we grade trails, please click here.
