“Embark on a scenic Catskills adventure through forests and peaks, rich in wildlife and history.”
Embarking on the Peekamoose Mountain and Table Mountain hike via the Phoenicia - East Branch Trail, you'll find yourself in the heart of the Catskill Mountains, near Ulster County, New York. This approximately 14 km (8.7 miles) out-and-back trail offers a cumulative elevation gain of around 700 meters (about 2300 feet), presenting a medium difficulty level that appeals to many hikers looking for a day's adventure.
Getting to the Trailhead
To reach the trailhead, if you're driving, navigate towards Peekamoose Road, which is accessible from Route 28 in the town of Shandaken. The trailhead is located off of Peekamoose Road, and there's a parking area designated for hikers. For those opting for public transportation, check local bus schedules as services may vary seasonally, and be prepared for a walk from the nearest bus stop to the trailhead.
The Hike Itself
As you begin your hike, the trail will take you through a mixed hardwood forest, where you'll be greeted by the sounds of the East Branch of the Neversink River. The initial section is relatively gentle, allowing you to warm up as you prepare for the more challenging ascent ahead.
Ascent to Peekamoose Mountain
The climb to Peekamoose Mountain is steady, and as you ascend, you'll notice the forest composition changing, with conifers becoming more prominent. Approximately 3.5 km (2.2 miles) into the hike, you'll reach Reconnoiter Rock, a notable landmark offering a vantage point to catch your breath and enjoy the views.
Continuing on, the trail becomes steeper, and at around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, you'll reach the summit of Peekamoose Mountain. Here, at an elevation of about 1170 meters (3840 feet), you'll be rewarded with expansive views of the surrounding Catskill high peaks.
Journey to Table Mountain
From Peekamoose, the trail dips down into a col before ascending again towards Table Mountain. This section can be rugged, with rocky terrain demanding careful foot placement. The summit of Table Mountain, sitting at an elevation of approximately 1175 meters (3855 feet), is reached after about 7 km (4.3 miles) from the start. The summit is less pronounced than Peekamoose but still offers a serene spot to rest and enjoy the natural beauty of the Catskills.
Flora, Fauna, and Historical Significance
Throughout the hike, keep an eye out for the diverse wildlife that inhabits the area, including white-tailed deer, black bears, and a variety of bird species. The trail also passes through areas rich in history, as the Catskills were once the hunting grounds of the Lenape people and later became a popular retreat during the American Romantic movement in the 19th century.
Preparation and Safety
Before setting out, ensure you have a map and compass or a navigation tool like HiiKER downloaded on your smartphone for offline use, as cell service can be spotty. Carry enough water, snacks, and wear appropriate footwear for the rocky and sometimes slippery terrain. Weather in the mountains can change rapidly, so pack layers and be prepared for varying conditions.
Remember to leave no trace, respect the natural environment, and enjoy the serene beauty of the Peekamoose Mountain and Table Mountain hike.
