The Coomloughra Horseshoe is a ridge trail over the three highest peaks in Ireland, Carrauntoohil being one of them. A unique trail, it is for experienced hikers; with around 4200 ft of elevation gain, this 12 km hike is strenuous and there are difficult and exposed sections. Be prepared to scramble in places and loose rocks are frequent, so hiking boots are a must. The ridge between Beenkeragh and Carrauntohil is particularly tough and navigational skills are needed, especially if the clouds roll in. lThe views though, from atop the ridge, over the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks range are spectacular and on a clear day you can see for miles. This trail will take around six to eight hours and a good level of fitness is needed, plus a head for heights! Dogs are not permitted on the trail.
