Starting near the picturesque village of West Dean in West Sussex, England, the West Dean Country Park Loop is an 8 km (approximately 5 miles) trail with an elevation gain of around 200 meters (656 feet). This loop trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
#### Into the Woodland Continuing from the college, the trail leads you into a dense woodland area. This section is approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) long and features a gentle ascent. The woodland is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, foxes, and numerous bird species. Keep an eye out for the ancient trees that have stood the test of time, adding a sense of history and grandeur to your hike.
#### The South Downs As you exit the woodland, you'll find yourself on the South Downs, a range of chalk hills that offer stunning panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. This section involves a steeper climb, contributing to the trail's total elevation gain. The climb is about 1.5 km (0.9 miles) long and rewards you with breathtaking vistas of the West Sussex landscape.
#### Return to West Dean The final leg of the loop takes you back down towards West Dean. This descent is more gradual and allows you to enjoy the open fields and meadows that characterize this part of the trail. You'll pass by several small streams and possibly encounter grazing sheep, adding to the pastoral charm of the area. The last 2.5 km (1.5 miles) bring you full circle back to the West Dean Gardens.
