Kingley Vale

Getting There To reach the trailhead, you can drive to the small village of West Stoke, which is easily accessible from Chichester. If you prefer public transport, take a train to Chichester Railway Station and then a bus or taxi to West Stoke. The trailhead is located near the West Stoke car park, which is well-signposted.

Trail Overview The trail begins with a gentle ascent through ancient woodlands, where you will be surrounded by a variety of native trees, including oak, beech, and yew. The initial 2 km (1.2 miles) of the trail will take you through these serene woods, gradually gaining elevation.

Historical Significance One of the most significant landmarks on this trail is the Kingley Vale National Nature Reserve, home to one of Europe's most impressive yew forests. Some of these yew trees are over 2,000 years old. As you hike through this area, you will also come across ancient burial mounds known as the Devil's Humps, which date back to the Bronze Age. These mounds are located around 4 km (2.5 miles) into the hike and offer a fascinating glimpse into the region's prehistoric past.

Wildlife and Nature The trail is rich in biodiversity. Keep an eye out for various bird species, including buzzards and green woodpeckers. The chalk grasslands are home to a variety of wildflowers, especially in the spring and summer months. Butterflies such as the Adonis blue and the chalkhill blue are commonly seen fluttering around.

Midpoint and Views Around the 6 km (3.7 miles) mark, you will reach the summit of Bow Hill, which offers panoramic views of the South Downs and the surrounding countryside. This is a great spot to take a break and enjoy the scenery. The elevation gain to this point is about 200 meters (656 feet).
