Loop
“Winding through ancient woodlands and past Iron Age ramparts, this loop rewards with sweeping Shropshire vistas.”
Starting your journey near Telford and Wrekin, the Little Hill, Wrekin Hill Fort and Limekiln Wood Loop offers a rewarding 14 km (about 8.7 miles) circuit with a total elevation gain of roughly 600 metres (1,970 feet). The trailhead is conveniently located near the Wrekin Retail Park, a well-known landmark just off the M54, making it accessible for those arriving by car or public transport. If using public transport, take a train to Telford Central Station, then a local bus or taxi to the Wrekin Retail Park area, which is a short distance from the trail’s starting point.
Initial Ascent and Little Hill
The loop begins with a gentle incline through mixed woodland, quickly immersing you in the tranquil Shropshire countryside. Early on, you’ll skirt the lower slopes of Little Hill, a modest rise that offers a taste of the elevation to come. The path here is well-trodden but can be muddy after rain, so sturdy footwear is recommended. Keep an eye out for native birdlife such as nuthatches and woodpeckers, especially in the early morning.
Climbing the Wrekin and Exploring the Hill Fort
After about 3 km (1.9 miles), the trail steepens as you approach the Wrekin, the most prominent feature of the route. The ascent is steady, with a series of switchbacks leading you through ancient woodland dominated by oak and beech. As you climb, panoramic views begin to open up, offering glimpses of the Shropshire Hills and, on clear days, even the distant Welsh mountains.
At the summit, around 407 metres (1,335 feet) above sea level, you’ll find the remains of the Wrekin Hill Fort, an Iron Age structure dating back over 2,000 years. The ramparts and ditches are still visible, and interpretive signs provide insight into the fort’s historical significance as a defensive stronghold for the Cornovii tribe. This is a perfect spot for a rest and to take in the sweeping vistas.
Descent and Limekiln Wood
The descent from the Wrekin is gradual, winding through Limekiln Wood, a designated Local Nature Reserve. This section is particularly scenic in spring, when bluebells carpet the forest floor. The woodland is home to a variety of wildlife, including roe deer and tawny owls. The trail here is shaded and cool, with occasional clearings that offer views back toward the Wrekin.
Navigation and Wayfinding
The loop is well-marked, but due to the network of intersecting paths, it’s advisable to use HiiKER for real-time navigation and to stay on the correct route. The app provides detailed mapping and elevation profiles, which are especially useful in the wooded sections where signage can be sparse.
Returning to the Trailhead
The final stretch leads you through open fields and hedgerows, gradually descending back toward the starting point near Wrekin Retail Park. This area is rich in wildflowers during the summer months, attracting butterflies and bees. The path is generally easy underfoot, making for a pleasant finish to the loop.
Throughout the hike, be prepared for variable weather, as the exposed sections near the summit can be windy and cool even in summer. Carry sufficient water and snacks, as there are no facilities directly on the trail. The combination of historical landmarks, diverse wildlife, and far-reaching views makes this loop a memorable outing for those seeking a moderately challenging day hike in Shropshire.
