The trail begins near the Once Brewed Visitor Centre, a great place to gather last-minute supplies and information. As you set off, you'll immediately be greeted by the rolling hills and open moorlands that characterize this part of Northumberland.
One of the most significant landmarks you'll encounter early on is Hadrian's Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built by the Romans in AD 122, this ancient fortification stretches across Northern England and offers a glimpse into the region's storied past. The wall itself is an impressive feat of engineering and provides numerous photo opportunities.
As you continue, the trail meanders through a mix of open countryside and dense woodlands. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including red squirrels, roe deer, and a variety of bird species. The area is also rich in flora, with seasonal wildflowers adding splashes of color to the landscape.
- Steel Rigg (approx. 3 km / 1.9 miles in): This viewpoint offers stunning vistas of Hadrian's Wall snaking its way across the rugged terrain. It's a great spot for a short break and some photos. - Housesteads Roman Fort (approx. 6 km / 3.7 miles in): One of the best-preserved Roman forts along Hadrian's Wall, Housesteads provides a fascinating look into Roman military life. There are informative displays and a small museum here. - Crag Lough (approx. 8 km / 5 miles in): A picturesque lake nestled among the hills, Crag Lough is a serene spot to pause and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
The trail features a mix of gentle inclines and steeper sections, particularly as you navigate the undulating terrain near Hadrian's Wall. The highest point of the trail is around 345 meters (1,132 feet) above sea level, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
Given the historical and natural landmarks along the route, navigation is relatively straightforward. However, it's always wise to have a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track. The trail is well-marked, but weather conditions can change rapidly, so be prepared for varying visibility.
As you approach the final leg of the hike, the landscape begins to level out, leading you through more pastoral settings. The village of Bellingham, your endpoint, is a quaint and welcoming place with several options for food and accommodation. It's also well-connected by public transport, making it easy to return to your starting point or continue your journey.
