“Discover diverse landscapes, historical paths, and breathtaking vistas on this moderately challenging 22 km loop hike.”
Starting near North Yorkshire, England, this 22 km (approximately 13.7 miles) loop trail offers a medium difficulty hike with an elevation gain of around 600 meters (approximately 1,970 feet). The trailhead is accessible by car, with parking available near the village of Sedbergh. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is in Oxenholme, from where you can take a bus to Sedbergh.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent through Low Bridge Field, a picturesque area characterized by lush meadows and grazing sheep. As you continue, you'll enter Wandsworth Wood, a serene woodland known for its diverse flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for native bird species such as the woodpecker and the nuthatch. The woodland path is well-marked but can be muddy after rain, so waterproof boots are recommended.
After exiting Wandsworth Wood, the trail ascends into the Howgill Fells, a range of hills offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. This section involves a more strenuous climb, but the effort is rewarded with breathtaking vistas. The Howgill Fells are known for their smooth, grassy slopes and are less rocky compared to other hill ranges in the UK. The highest point on this trail is around 600 meters (1,970 feet) above sea level, providing a perfect spot for a rest and some photography.
Descending from the Howgill Fells, you'll join the Memorial Path, a historically significant route that commemorates local soldiers who fought in World War I. Along this path, you'll find several plaques and memorial stones, offering a poignant reminder of the area's history. The path is relatively flat and easy to navigate, making it a pleasant end to the hike.
For navigation, it's advisable to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates. The trail is generally well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can help you stay on track, especially in the more remote sections of the Howgill Fells.
Throughout the hike, you'll encounter a variety of wildlife, including red squirrels, deer, and numerous bird species. The flora is equally diverse, with seasonal wildflowers adding splashes of color to the landscape. In spring and summer, the meadows are particularly vibrant, making this an excellent time for a visit.
To reach the trailhead by car, head towards Sedbergh, where parking is available near the village center. If you're using public transport, take a train to Oxenholme and then a bus to Sedbergh. The bus journey offers scenic views and takes approximately 30 minutes.
This trail offers a blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding experience for hikers of all levels.
