To reach the trailhead, you can take a train to Barnstaple and then a bus to Instow, or drive and park near the beach.### Instow Beach to Greysands Beach The first section of the trail takes you along Instow Beach, where you can enjoy the serene coastal environment. As you walk along the beach, keep an eye out for various seabirds, including oystercatchers and sandpipers. The trail then leads you to Greysands Beach, a quieter and more secluded area perfect for a peaceful stroll.### Greysands Beach to Northam Burrows Country Park Continuing from Greysands Beach, the trail heads towards Northam Burrows Country Park. This section is relatively flat, with an elevation gain of around 200 meters (656 feet) spread out over the entire trail. Northam Burrows is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and offers a unique landscape of salt marshes, sand dunes, and grazing land. Here, you might spot wild ponies and a variety of plant species, including sea lavender and thrift.### Historical Significance As you make your way through Northam Burrows, you'll be walking in an area steeped in history. The Burrows have been used for grazing since medieval times, and you can still see remnants of ancient field systems. Additionally, the area played a role during World War II as a training ground for American troops preparing for the D-Day landings.### Tarka Trail The final stretch of the hike follows the Tarka Trail, a well-maintained path that offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Named after the famous novel "Tarka the Otter" by Henry Williamson, the trail provides a glimpse into the natural beauty that inspired the book.
