Starting near the picturesque village of Postbridge in Devon, England, the Higher White Tor trail offers a delightful 7 km (4.3 miles) out-and-back hike with an elevation gain of approximately 100 meters (328 feet). This medium-difficulty trail is perfect for those looking to explore the rugged beauty of Dartmoor National Park.### Getting There To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Postbridge, which is well-signposted from major roads in Devon. If you prefer public transport, buses run from Exeter and Plymouth to Postbridge, making it accessible for those without a car. The nearest significant landmark to the trailhead is the historic Postbridge Clapper Bridge, a medieval stone bridge that is worth a visit before you start your hike.### Trail Overview The trail begins near the Postbridge Clapper Bridge, where you can park your car or get off the bus. From here, head north along the well-marked path that leads you through open moorland. The initial part of the trail is relatively flat, allowing you to warm up before the gradual ascent begins.### Landmarks and Nature As you hike, you'll pass through a landscape dotted with granite tors, heather, and gorse. About 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll come across Hartland Tor, a smaller granite outcrop that offers a good spot for a short break. Keep an eye out for Dartmoor ponies, which are often seen grazing in this area.Continuing on, the trail gradually ascends towards Higher White Tor. The climb is steady but manageable, with the path becoming rockier as you approach the tor. At around the 3.5 km (2.2 miles) mark, you'll reach the summit of Higher White Tor. Here, you are rewarded with panoramic views of Dartmoor, including Bellever Forest to the south and the distant peaks of the northern moors.### Historical Significance Dartmoor is rich in history, and this trail is no exception. The area around Higher White Tor is known for its Bronze Age settlements and stone circles. While the exact purpose of these ancient structures remains a mystery, they add a sense of historical depth to your hike. Look out for the remnants of old stone walls and hut circles as you explore the tor.### Wildlife and Flora The moorland habitat supports a variety of wildlife. In addition to Dartmoor ponies, you might spot skylarks, meadow pipits, and even the occasional buzzard soaring overhead. The flora is equally diverse, with seasonal blooms of heather and gorse adding splashes of color to the landscape.### Navigation and Safety Given the open and often remote nature of Dartmoor, it's essential to be prepared. The weather can change rapidly, so bring appropriate clothing and gear. A map and compass are recommended, and for digital navigation, the HiiKER app is an excellent tool to ensure you stay on track. After enjoying the views and perhaps a picnic at Higher White Tor, retrace your steps back to Postbridge. The return journey offers a different perspective of the landscape, making the descent as enjoyable as the climb. This trail provides a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding experience for any hiker.
