Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak Trail is a challenging hike that takes you to the summit of two iconic peaks in the Elk Mountains of Colorado, Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak. The hike starts at the Maroon Lake Trailhead and follows the Maroon Peak Trail for the first portion of the hike. The trail is well-defined and passes through aspen groves and alpine meadows, offering spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The trail is steep and challenging, with an elevation gain of about 3,800 feet to the summit of Maroon Peak.After reaching the summit of Maroon Peak, hikers will then continue along the trail towards North Maroon Peak. This portion of the trail is more challenging, as it involves a class 3 scramble and requires basic knowledge of climbing and scrambling techniques. The final push to the summit of North Maroon Peak is steep, rocky and more difficult than Maroon Peak, but the views from the top are truly breathtaking, with panoramic vistas of the Maroon Bells, Pyramid Peak, and other peaks in the Elk Mountains.The total round trip distance for the hike is about 9.9 miles and the elevation gain is about 4,800 feet. It's important to be well-prepared for the hike, hikers should be in good physical shape, have the proper equipment, such as sturdy hiking boots, helmet, harness, plenty of water, snacks, and suitable clothing. Additionally, hikers should be aware of the changing weather conditions and be prepared for potential thunderstorms, especially in the summer months. It's important to be aware of the altitude, start early and be aware of the time to return before dark.
