Mount Belford and Mount Oxford are both 14,197 foot (4,319 meter) mountain peaks located in the Sawatch Range of Colorado, United States. Hiking from Mount Belford to Mount Oxford via the Missouri Gulch Trail is a challenging hike that is typically done as a backpacking trip. The hike is approximately 10.4 miles round-trip with an elevation gain of over 5,700 feet (1,828 meters) and takes hikers over Elkhead Pass.
The trail starts at the Missouri Gulch Trailhead, and hikers will follow the same trail that leads to the summit of Mount Belford before continuing on to Mount Oxford. After reaching the summit of Mount Belford, hikers will continue on to Elkhead Pass, which is located at an elevation of 13,800 feet (4,206 m). The trail becomes more rocky and strenuous, and hikers should be prepared for steep inclines and rocky terrain. The hike over Elkhead Pass offers spectacular views of the surrounding peaks, including Mount Belford and Mount Harvard.
After reaching Elkhead Pass, the trail begins to descent and the trail to Mount Oxford starts. The trail to Mount Oxford is steep and rocky, with some scrambling required near the top. The summit of Mount Oxford offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including Mount Belford and the Sawatch Range.
It's important to note that this hike is considered to be a challenging hike and should only be attempted by experienced hikers with proper equipment and preparation. It's recommended to start early in the morning and to bring plenty of water, snacks, and warm clothing, as the weather can change quickly at high altitude. Be aware of the potential for thunderstorms and lightning, as well as the risk of exposure. It's also important to be aware that Elkhead pass is above treeline and can be exposed to the elements.
